Product Description
The Advent Infinity Scarf is a great way to display your yarns from an Advent Calendar Yarn set, leftover mini skeins, or scrap yarn. You will need 24 mini skeins of 10 grams each (approximately 40 yards per skein). I swapped yarn leftovers with a friend to obtain my 24 minis. It is composed of 4 sections that repeat 6 times.
Advent Infinity Scarf by Katrina Workman Designs
What Is Being Made
The Advent Infinity Scarf is a circular, continuous scarf constructed from 4 distinct knitted sections that repeat 6 times throughout the design. This repetitive structure creates an infinity scarf—a seamless loop that can be worn doubled around the neck or styled in multiple ways. The scarf is designed as a beginner-friendly project, making it an accessible introduction to intermediate knitting techniques while still producing a sophisticated finished garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:
- Yarn overs (yo) are used strategically throughout the sections to create decorative holes and lace-like elements that add airiness to the scarf
- Decreases using k2tog (knit 2 together) and p3tog (purl 3 together) are incorporated to balance the yarn overs and shape the fabric
- Knit front and back (kfb) increases add texture and dimension in specific areas
- Passover (psso) decreases in Section 4 create additional stitch manipulation for visual effects
- Stitch markers are placed to define edge stitches and help maintain pattern alignment across the repeats
- Slip stitches with yarn in back (swyb) and yarn in front (swyf) are used for seamless stitch transitions
Stitches Used
The Advent Infinity Scarf utilizes a focused selection of essential knitting stitches:
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base structure
- Purl (p) – used primarily in even rows to create reverse stockinette sections
- Yarn over (yo) – creates intentional holes and lace patterning
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used throughout multiple sections
- Purl 3 together (p3tog) – a decrease that combines multiple stitches for texture
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase that adds stitch count and dimension
- Passover (psso) – a slip-stitch-based decrease used in Section 4
- Slip stitch (sl) – used with yarn positioning to create smooth transitions
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Advent Infinity Scarf is designed with fingering/sock weight yarn, which is a 4-ply yarn weight. The pattern calls for 24 mini skeins, each containing 8–10 grams of yarn with approximately 40 yards per skein. This totals roughly 960 yards of yarn for the complete scarf. The use of multiple mini skeins allows crafters to incorporate color variation throughout the design, making it ideal for creating a striped or gradient effect with different yarn colors in each section repeat.
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires US 6 (4mm) knitting needles to work with the fingering/sock weight yarn at the appropriate gauge. Additionally, 2 stitch markers are needed to designate the edge stitches and pattern boundaries throughout the knitting process, helping maintain consistency across the 6 section repeats.
Construction and Pattern Structure
The scarf begins with a cast-on of 49 stitches, with 3 edge stitches marked on each side to create clean borders. The 4 distinct sections are then repeated 6 times in sequence, building the full infinity scarf. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and notation, with parentheses indicating stitch sequences to be repeated multiple times within each row. Even-numbered rows typically feature consistent edge treatment and purl stitches, while odd-numbered rows introduce the pattern variations and stitch manipulations that create the scarf's visual design.
