Add A Twist Knitted Sweater by Pat Menchini

What is Being Made

Add A Twist is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Pat Menchini. This pullover garment features a classic construction with six size options, ranging from bust measurements of 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) to 127-132 cm (50-52 inches). The sweater is designed to be a versatile layering piece with finished bust measurements of 88 cm to 142 cm depending on size selection. The garment includes long sleeves and a neckband finishing, with length at the centre back ranging from 58 cm to 66 cm (23 to 26 inches), and sleeve seams measuring between 30 cm and 34 cm (12 to 13.5 inches).

Techniques and Construction

This knitting pattern employs traditional sweater construction techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The design incorporates cable work, as evidenced by the requirement for a cable needle in the materials list. The sweater is worked using fundamental knitting methods that combine stockinette stitch with decorative cable elements, creating visual interest and texture throughout the garment. The pattern requires careful tension management and attention to shaping details to achieve the precise finished measurements.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch (st-st), which forms the base fabric of the sweater. The pattern incorporates cable stitches as decorative elements, requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted, rope-like textures. These cable details add dimensional interest to the design while maintaining the intermediate skill level of the project.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

  • Yarn: Rico Essentials Merino DK, a worsted-weight yarn in DK (double knit) weight classification
  • Yarn Quantity: 10, 10, 11, 12, 12, or 13 balls of 50g each (depending on size), providing approximately 1,310 to 1,703 yards of yarn total
  • Yarn Fiber: Merino wool blend offering softness and breathability
  • Color: Ivory (shade 22)
  • Needles: Two pairs of knitting needles—3.25 mm (UK size 10, US size 3) for ribbing and 4 mm (UK size 8, US size 6) for main fabric
  • Additional Tools: One cable needle for working cable stitches

Tension and Gauge

The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) when measured over stockinette stitch using 4 mm needles. Achieving accurate tension is critical for this project, as it directly affects the final garment measurements. Knitters are advised to test their tension before beginning the main sweater to ensure proper fit. If the tension is too loose, a finer needle size should be used; conversely, if too tight, a larger needle may be necessary.

Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level

This pattern is worked in DK (double knit) weight yarn, a medium-weight classification that creates a fabric with good drape and structure. The intermediate difficulty level makes this project suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable work and garment shaping. The combination of stockinette stitch with cable elements provides an engaging project that builds technical proficiency without overwhelming newer knitters.
