Product Description

Adamantite is a circular poncho. It is started from the center and worked in the round, top down, evenly increasing the stitch count until the outer edge is reached. You are always knitting on the right side of the fabric (RS), until you reach the edge portion of the poncho. The work is begun with short circular needles and continued with longer ones as the poncho grows bigger.

When the body portion is completed, the poncho is finished by knitting a lace edging sideways around the outside of the circular body portion. The edge portion is worked on both sides of the fabric (RS and WS).

The lace pattern is charted only. There are two charts: a big one for the main portion of the poncho, and a smaller one for the edge. The big chart has easily memorizable repeats, though, so it isn't overly advanced. The stitches used are k, p, yo, kfb, k2tog, skp, sk2p, M1L and M1R.

Adamantite Circular Poncho by Henna Markkanen

What is Being Made

Adamantite is a circular knitted poncho designed by Henna Markkanen. This garment is a top-down construction piece that measures 20 inches (50 centimeters) in length from neck to hem, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons. The poncho features a classic circular silhouette worked in the round from the center outward, creating an elegant and symmetrical finished garment.

Knitting Techniques

This advanced-level knitting project employs several sophisticated techniques that make it suitable for experienced knitters. The poncho is constructed using a top-down circular method, beginning from the center neck and working outward in expanding rounds. This approach allows for continuous knitting on the right side of the fabric throughout most of the project, creating a seamless construction. The pattern incorporates even stitch increases distributed evenly around each round, gradually expanding the diameter of the poncho until the desired outer edge dimensions are reached. The edge portion of the poncho features specialized finishing techniques that differ from the main body construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used in Adamantite is a lace pattern stitch, which creates an openwork fabric with decorative holes and texture. This lace pattern is worked in the round and maintains a gauge of 16 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters). The lace construction adds visual interest and creates a lighter, more breathable fabric compared to stockinette stitch, making this poncho suitable for layering.

Yarn and Materials

Adamantite is designed to be worked in fingering weight yarn, though the product attributes indicate a 4-ply weight classification. The pattern specifies approximately 1200 yards (1100 meters) of main color yarn in red and 110 yards (100 meters) of contrast color yarn in black. The recommended yarn is Gjestal Spire, which is composed of 100% wool with a yardage of 250 meters (274 yards) per 50-gram skein. This wool yarn provides excellent stitch definition for the lace pattern and offers durability for long-term wear.

Knitting needles required include US 4 (3.5 millimeter) needles and US 3 (3.0 to 3.25 millimeter) needles, allowing for gauge adjustments and potential needle sizing variations for the edge portion. Additional materials needed for completion include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, blocking pins for finishing, and one stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds during the circular knitting process.

Pattern Details and Difficulty

This pattern is classified as advanced difficulty, reflecting the skill level required to successfully complete the lace pattern work, manage circular knitting techniques, and execute the top-down construction method. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, making it accessible for digital reference during the knitting process. This is an independent designer pattern created by Henna Markkanen and is intended for private, noncommercial use only.
