The most important thing to know about my designs is GAUGE. You will notice that most of my patterns are specifically designed for bed sizes (tops or draped), throw sizes and scarves/pillows. The combination of gauge and yarn type is crucial in achieving the finished size. There are instructions inside of the pattern PDF on how to make swatches.

**My gauges for LFC******

refer to the DC’s. Even though it isn’t mentioned, it does include the chains in between them.

A Mazed LFC King Sized Bed Throw

What is Being Made

A Mazed LFC is a large crochet blanket and throw designed for king-sized beds, measuring 73 inches by 73 inches when completed. This substantial afghan combines visual interest with functional warmth, making it suitable for both decorative display and everyday use on larger bed frames.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using crochet as the primary craft method. The pattern employs locking filet crochet, a specialized filet technique that creates defined geometric patterns through strategic placement of stitches and spaces. Filet crochet is characterized by its grid-like structure, where filled and open spaces form the design, and the "locking" variation adds structural integrity to the finished piece.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern utilizes the following core stitches and abbreviations:

  • DC (Double Crochet) – The primary stitch used throughout the project, forming the foundation of the filet grid
  • CH (Chain) – Used to create the foundation and spaces within the filet pattern
  • SP (Space) – Open areas created by chains and skipped stitches that form part of the design
  • SK (Skip) – Technique for creating spaces in the filet pattern
  • SS (Side Stitch) – Always worked in the main color for consistency
  • IS-B (Inside Side Stitch to the Back) – Directional stitch variation for the alternate color
  • IS-F (Inside Side Stitch to the Front) – Directional stitch variation for the alternate color
  • FOW (Front Of Work) and BOW (Back Of Work) – Directional references for stitch placement

Pattern Chart and Gauge

The design is worked from a chart measuring 289 by 283 units, providing a detailed visual guide for the locking filet pattern. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 double crochets by 8 double crochets equals 4 inches by 4 inches. Crocheters are strongly encouraged to create and measure gauge swatches before beginning the full project, as variations in tension and hook size directly affect the final blanket dimensions.

Yarn and Materials

This project calls for worsted weight yarn in two colors:

  • MC (Main Color) – Approximately 3,000 yards
  • AC (Alternate Color) – Approximately 3,000 yards

The substantial yardage requirements reflect the generous 73-inch by 73-inch finished size. Crocheters should select an appropriate crochet hook size based on their personal gauge swatch results, as the pattern emphasizes that hook size and yarn choice directly influence stitch dimensions.

Difficulty Level and Skill Considerations

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and comfortable reading chart-based patterns. The locking filet technique requires attention to stitch placement and directional variations (front versus back stitches), making it more advanced than simple single-color projects. The large scale of the finished piece demands sustained focus and consistent tension maintenance throughout the project.

Pattern Notes and Recommendations

The designer emphasizes the importance of creating and saving gauge swatches before beginning the main project. Swatches should be measured from the interior of the work rather than from the edges, where tension may vary. The pattern includes free sample materials available for download, allowing crocheters to practice techniques and verify gauge accuracy before committing to the full yardage requirements for the complete afghan.
