Product Description

A Knot in Time Cowl is a mesmerising modern take on lace inspired by cable knitting.

This cowl uses 400m (438 yards) of lace weight yarn.

The pattern includes a chart for the lace work. The even rows of the lace is worked in plain knit. The lace stitches involved include: yarn over, k2tog, ssk, sl1-k2tog-psso, knit through back loop.

It is knitted in the round with a British moss stitch (seed stitch) border along the bottom (cast on) and top (cast off) edges.

The finished size after blocking is height: 8.5” (21.5cm) by width circumference: 29” (73.5cm). The cowl can be made larger or smaller by completing less or more repeats of the chart.

The photographed sample was knit with 3.00mm (2.5US) 24” (60cm) circular needles and 1 skein of Malabrigo, (100% merino wool), 50 grams/470 yards (430 meters) in Frank Ochre (035); however, there are many other wonderful colours.

Enjoy and happy knitting!

A Knot in Time Cowl by MunroSisters3

Project Overview

The A Knot in Time Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Fiona Munro of MunroSisters3. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sophisticated lace cowl perfect for adding elegance to any wardrobe. The finished cowl measures 29 inches (73.5 centimeters) in circumference with a height of 8.5 inches (21.5 centimeters), making it an ideal accessory for layering and styling.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a single-size lace cowl—a tubular neck accessory worked in the round. The cowl features an open, delicate lace construction that creates visual interest while remaining lightweight and breathable. The finished piece is designed to drape gracefully around the neck, offering both warmth and sophisticated style.

Knitting Techniques Used

The A Knot in Time Cowl employs circular knitting as its primary construction method, worked continuously in the round to create a seamless tubular garment. The pattern utilizes lace knitting techniques, which involve strategic yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterns. Knitters will follow a lace chart that repeats across the rounds, requiring intermediate-level chart reading skills. The pattern incorporates blocking as a finishing technique to help set the lace pattern and achieve proper drape and dimensions.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The cowl is worked primarily in lace stitch, a pattern category that combines knit and purl stitches with yarn overs and decreases to create openwork designs. The lace chart contains 37 stitches and spans 72 rows, which are repeated six times total to complete each round before working the chart's first row once more. This repetitive charted pattern creates the signature delicate, open texture characteristic of lace cowls.

Materials and Tools

  • Yarn: Malabrigo Lace weight yarn in the colorway Frank Ochre (035). The pattern requires 1 skein of approximately 400 meters (438 yards) of 100% merino wool. Lace weight yarn is exceptionally fine, allowing the delicate stitch definition to shine while keeping the finished cowl lightweight and elegant.
  • Needles: 3.00mm (US size 2.5) circular needles in a 16-inch length, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge
  • Additional Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and pins for blocking the finished cowl

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 31 stitches and 35 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in lace stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, and knitters are encouraged to adjust needle size as needed to match this gauge before beginning the project.

Pattern Support and Design

The A Knot in Time Cowl pattern was supported in part by the Eat.Sleep.Knit. Pattern Academy Design Fellowship, indicating professional pattern development and testing. This pattern is the intellectual property of Fiona Munro and MunroSisters3, protected by copyright as of 2020.
