Product Description

Inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, the Shenandoah Valley Shawl by Katharine Malcolm has mountains at each end and a valley in the center. This large shawl is perfect for those lovely summer evenings when you want just a little warmth. The ends of the shawl feature triangles of alternating lace and cable patterns. The cable rows become stockinette stitch in the center, bordered by the same eyelet lace pattern. Knit in wonderfully soft and drapey Valley Yarns 2/14 Alpaca Silk. Note: Lace pattern is both charted and written.

721 Shenandoah Valley Shawl – Knitting Pattern by Katharine Malcolm in Valley Yarns 2/14 Alpaca Silk

The 721 Shenandoah Valley Shawl is a large, elegant rectangular shawl knitting pattern designed by Katharine Malcolm. Inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, this breathtaking piece translates a natural landscape directly into knitted fabric: mountain-like triangles of alternating cable and lace patterns rise at each end of the shawl, while the center section opens into a valley of smooth Stockinette stitch bordered by a delicate eyelet lace edging. The finished shawl measures 27 inches wide by 72 inches long after blocking, making it a generously sized wrap ideal for cool summer evenings or as a sophisticated accessory for any season.

Design Concept and Construction

The shawl is worked seamlessly in one piece from end to end, beginning with a cast-on of 168 stitches using a loose cast-on method. The construction moves through a series of charted sections — labeled Chart A, Chart C, and Chart D — each representing a different zone of the landscape motif. The two ends of the shawl feature triangles built from alternating panels of cable and lace, which gradually transition as the work progresses toward the center. In the center valley section, the cable columns relax into Stockinette stitch, while the eyelet lace pattern continues as a consistent border, unifying the entire design. Stitch markers are used to delineate sections, and the pattern instructs knitters to repeat the central chart rows until the shawl reaches approximately 28 inches shorter than the desired total length before transitioning to the final end section.

Techniques Used

  • Cables: The mountain sections feature prominent 3/3 right cross (3/3 RC) cables, worked with a cable needle. These six-stitch cables create bold, textured columns that evoke the ridgelines of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cable rows alternate with plain wrong-side rows, giving the fabric a classic raised cable appearance.
  • Lace: A repeating eyelet lace motif runs throughout the shawl, using yarn overs (yo), ssk, and k2tog decreases to create an open, airy pattern. This lace element provides visual contrast against the dense cable sections and adds a graceful, feminine quality to the finished piece.
  • Seamless construction: The shawl is knitted in a single continuous piece with no seaming required, ensuring a smooth, uninterrupted fabric surface that drapes beautifully after blocking.
  • Blocking: Blocking is an essential finishing step for this pattern. The gauge is measured after blocking at 26 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches in Chart C, and blocking opens up the lace sections and evens the cable texture to achieve the full 27" × 72" dimensions.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – forms the calm, smooth valley center of the shawl
  • Garter stitch – used at the edges (k3 selvedge borders) for stability and a neat finish
  • 3/3 Right Cross (3/3 RC) cable – the primary cable stitch, worked over six stitches with a cable needle
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates the open eyelets of the lace pattern
  • SSK (slip, slip, knit) – a left-leaning decrease paired with lace yarn overs
  • K2tog (knit two together) – a right-leaning decrease paired with lace yarn overs
  • Purl stitches – used as column dividers between cable and lace panels on right-side rows

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for 1 cone of Valley Yarns 2/14 Alpaca Silk, a luxurious lace weight yarn composed of 80% Alpaca and 20% Silk, with approximately 1,736 yards per 8.8-ounce cone. The sample shawl uses approximately 1,500 yards in the colorway Whipple Blue
