603 Arbor Pullover – Seamed Women's Pullover Knitting Pattern by Valley Yarns

The 603 Arbor Pullover, designed by Kirsten Hipsky and published by Valley Yarns, is a beautifully fitted women's pullover featuring a distinctive textured yoke worked in two colors. This intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a classic set-in sleeve sweater with a flattering silhouette achieved through careful waist shaping, making it an excellent project for knitters ready to move beyond basic construction techniques.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a seamed, set-in sleeve pullover for women, worked in pieces and assembled. The design features a fitted body with a shaped waist and a decorative two-color textured yoke at the upper front and back. The sweater is available in seven finished sizes: 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, and 56 inches in finished bust circumference, with the sample shown in size 36 inches. The combination of a smooth stockinette body and a richly textured yoke gives the Arbor Pullover a refined, polished look suitable for everyday wear.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Valley Yarns Amherst, a 100% merino wool worsted weight yarn sold in 50g skeins with approximately 109 yards per skein. Two colors are used:

  • Main Color (MC): Soft Grape – 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14 skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color (CC): Natural – 1 skein across all sizes

Valley Yarns Amherst's 100% merino fiber content gives the finished pullover exceptional softness against the skin, excellent stitch definition, and a slight natural elasticity that helps the ribbing and textured yoke sections hold their shape beautifully over time. Worsted weight yarn works up relatively quickly, making this a satisfying project for intermediate knitters.

Needles

The pattern requires US size 8 (5.00mm) circular needles in both a 16-inch and a 32-inch or longer length, or whatever needle size is needed to achieve the correct gauge. Circular needles are used even for flat, seamed knitting as they comfortably hold the large number of stitches required for the body and sleeves.

Gauge

Achieving accurate gauge is essential for a well-fitting seamed garment. The required gauge is 18 stitches and 24 rows equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Knitters are strongly encouraged to swatch and block before beginning, as even a small gauge discrepancy can result in a significantly different finished size across the width of a sweater body.

Construction and Techniques

The 603 Arbor Pullover is worked using a traditional seamed construction method, meaning the back, front, and sleeves are knitted as separate flat pieces and then joined using seaming techniques such as mattress stitch. This approach gives the finished garment a structured, tailored feel and makes it easy to try on pieces for fit as you go.

Key construction techniques used throughout the pattern include:

  • Waist shaping: The body is shaped through a series of decreases and increases worked every 8th row, creating a gently fitted silhouette that narrows at the waist and then widens back out to the bust.
  • Armhole shaping: Set-in armholes are formed by binding off stitches at the beginning of rows and then working paired decreases on right-side rows, creating the curved shaping needed to accommodate a set-in sleeve cap.
  • Shoulder shaping: Shoulders are shaped using stepped bind-offs worked over multiple rows, producing a neat, angled shoulder seam that lies flat and is easy to seam.
  • Two-color yoke patterning: The upper front and back feature a distinctive textured pattern worked with both the Soft Grape MC and the Natural CC. This yoke pattern uses a combination of knit and purl stitches alongside a slip-stitch or stranded technique that creates visual interest without requiring complex colorwork skills.
