584 Thaw Cabled Blanket – Knitting Pattern by Valley Yarns

The 584 Thaw Cabled Blanket is a richly textured, heavyweight knitted blanket pattern designed by Kirsten Hipsky and published by Valley Yarns. Available as a downloadable PDF, this intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a stunning square blanket bursting with intricate cable panels and classic texture stitches. Worked flat with two strands of yarn held together throughout, the finished blanket is exceptionally warm, heavy, and cozy — exactly the kind of heirloom-quality throw that showcases confident cabling skills.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a cabled knitted blanket in three finished size options:

  • 42" x 42" (small square)
  • 48" x 42" (medium rectangle — the size shown in the pattern photos)
  • 48" x 52" (large rectangle)

The blanket features multiple distinct cable panels arranged across its width, framed with moss stitch borders that add a beautifully subtle, woven-looking texture. The combination of bold cables and soft moss stitch edging gives the finished piece a polished, professional appearance suitable for home décor, gifting, or everyday use.

Techniques Used

  • Worked flat — the blanket is knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round, making it accessible to knitters comfortable with right-side and wrong-side row management
  • Seamless construction — no seaming is required, so the finished blanket comes off the needles ready to block and use
  • Cabling — multiple distinct cable panels are worked across the blanket, each requiring a cable needle to cross stitches in front of or behind the work; this is the central technique of the pattern and the primary design feature
  • Double-stranding — two strands of worsted weight yarn are held together throughout the entire project, effectively creating a bulky-weight fabric with exceptional drape and warmth
  • Blocking — gauge is measured after blocking, so wet or steam blocking is an important finishing step to open up the cables and achieve the correct finished dimensions

Stitches Used

The pattern calls on a satisfying variety of stitches and cable crossings, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to build or refine their cabling vocabulary:

  • Moss Stitch — worked over an even number of stitches in a four-row repeat alternating knit and purl columns; used as a border and textural contrast element throughout the blanket
  • Little Twist Cable — a panel of 6 stitches worked over a four-row repeat, featuring a front four-stitch cable cross (F4C) on the right-side rows flanked by purl stitches
  • Left Braid Cable — a panel of 12 stitches using front and back cable crosses (FC and BC) to create an elegant braided rope effect that travels to the left
  • Center Cable — a substantial panel of 24 stitches combining multiple cable crossings including FC, BC, F4C, and B4C to produce a bold, complex central motif
  • BC (c2 over 1 right purl cross) — slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold to back, knit 2, then purl 1 from cable needle
  • FC (c2 over 1 left purl cross) — slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to front, purl 1, then knit 2 from cable needle
  • F4C (c2 over 2 left knit cross) — slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to front, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
  • B4C (c2 over 2 right knit cross) — slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to back, knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle
  • Standard knit and purl stitches — used throughout for cable panels, moss stitch, and maintaining the
