4 Seasons Cute Short Sleeved Top by JustJussi
What is Being Made
The 4 Seasons is a cute short sleeved top designed for babies and toddlers, available in five sizes ranging from newborn (3 months) through 24 months. The garment features a chest measurement range of 44 cm to 56 cm, making it suitable for growing children across multiple seasons. This is an original knitwear design by Justine Turner, created to be worked in one piece for streamlined construction.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create a polished finished garment. The pattern utilizes the 3-needle bind off method, a professional finishing technique that joins two sets of stitches together while simultaneously binding them off. This method involves arranging stitches to be cast off on two needles with right sides together, then using a third needle to knit corresponding stitches from the front and back needles together, slipping the first stitch over the second as in a conventional cast off. The one-piece construction method reduces seaming and creates a seamless, well-fitted garment.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches as the foundation of the fabric. Cast off techniques include both knitwise and purlwise cast off options, allowing knitters to choose the bind-off method that best suits their yarn and desired edge finish. These basic stitches combine to create the structured fabric suitable for a fitted children's garment.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The 4 Seasons top is worked in sport weight or light DK yarn, a versatile yarn weight ideal for creating lightweight, breathable garments perfect for layering across seasons. The pattern requires approximately 166 meters (181 yards) per 50 grams (1.76 ounces) of yarn, though the designer notes that yarn at 137 meters to 50 grams also works well. Wool or wool blend yarns are recommended for their durability, temperature-regulating properties, and classic appearance. The designer has tested multiple DK wool options with success, confirming the pattern's flexibility with different yarn sources within the specified weight range.
Needles and Tools
Knitting needles appropriate for sport and light DK weight yarn are required to complete this project. The one-piece construction method means knitters will need needles capable of holding the full width of stitches for the body, plus additional needles for the three-needle bind-off finishing technique.
