Pattern #326 Sienna Pullover – Knitting Pattern for Women by Elisabeth Parker
The Sienna Pullover is a women's pullover sweater knitting pattern designed by Elisabeth Parker and published under the Valley Yarns brand. This intermediate-level pattern produces a beautifully textured, fitted pullover featuring a striking Horseshoe cable detail on the back, making it a rewarding project for knitters who are comfortable with cables and seamless construction techniques. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF.
What Is Being Made
The finished garment is a women's seamless pullover sweater worked from the bottom up and in the round. It is offered in five finished bust sizes: 34, 38, 42, 46, and 50 inches, making it accessible to a wide range of body types. The design combines smooth stockinette with a textured cable panel, giving the back of the sweater a classic, elegant look. The sleeves are worked separately and then joined to the body for raglan shaping, creating smooth, structured shoulder lines without any seaming.
Construction Techniques
- Bottom-up construction: The body of the pullover is worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing knitters to easily adjust length before joining for the yoke.
- Seamless, worked in the round: The body is knitted in the round on a circular needle, eliminating the need for side seams and producing a clean, professional finish.
- Provisional cast-on: The sleeves begin with a provisional cast-on of 64 (72, 78, 84, 92) stitches, a technique that allows live stitches to be picked up later if needed and gives a polished edge.
- Raglan shaping: After the sleeves are worked separately in the round, they are joined to the body and shaped using raglan decreases. This involves binding off underarm stitches and working decreases at regular intervals across all four raglan seam lines, creating the characteristic diagonal lines of a raglan yoke.
- Cable work: A Horseshoe cable pattern is worked on the back of the sweater. Cables are created by holding stitches on a cable needle and crossing groups of stitches over one another, producing a raised, rope-like or horseshoe-shaped motif. This technique requires a cable needle and adds beautiful textural interest to the garment.
- Joining sleeves in the round: After working each sleeve separately, bound-off underarm stitches are created and the sleeve stitches are placed on holders or joined directly to the body, with markers placed at each junction to guide raglan shaping.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used
- Stockinette stitch: The primary fabric stitch, worked by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows (or knitting every round when working in the round).
- Horseshoe cable: A classic cable stitch pattern worked on the back panel of the sweater, creating a decorative and textured design element.
- Bind-off and decrease techniques: Standard bind-offs are used at the underarms, and raglan shaping is achieved through paired decreases worked at each of the four raglan markers as the yoke is shaped.
- Purl stitches: Used in transitional rows when joining sleeves to the body and working back-and-forth sections during yoke construction.
Materials
- Yarn: Valley Yarns Southwick, a worsted weight yarn with a fiber content of 52% pima cotton and 48% bamboo, sold in 50g skeins with approximately 105 yards per skein. The sample shown uses color 19 Toffee. The pattern calls for 7 (9, 10, 12, 14) skeins depending on size. The pima cotton and bamboo blend gives the fabric a soft drape, a subtle sheen, and excellent breathability, making this pullover suitable for year-round wear.
- Needles: US size 5 (3.75mm) 32-inch circular needles in the size needed to achieve gauge, plus US size 5 double-pointed needles for working the sleeves in the round.
