What you'll need

Product Description

Frothy, silky lace surrounds your neck or shoulders with this delicate rectangular shawl.

The kid mohair and silk blend yarn is technically a lace-weight yarn, but when knit up on larger needles, it produces a warm, yet airy and light fabric.

The allover lace pattern features staggered motifs resembling candlelights. Set against the Stockinette stitch background, the placement of the motifs creates gentle medallion shapes throughout the length of this shawl.

The intermediate level lace becomes more intuitive and easier to work as you repeat it over and over.

Lace is both charted and written. Length of stole is easily adjusted by working more or fewer repeats of the lace pattern.

Shown in Elann Silken Kydd, but easily substituted with the other Kid Mohair and Silk blends. Some suggested ones listed above.

GAUGE: 20 sts = 4 ¼" / 11 cm and 24 rows = 4 ¾" / 12 cm in Lace patt, blocked

Candlelight Shawl #282 by SweaterBabe.com

Project Overview

The Candlelight Shawl is a delicate rectangular shawl designed for knitters seeking an elegant, wearable lace project. This intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a frothy, silky accessory that drapes beautifully around the neck or shoulders. The shawl combines technical lace work with accessible construction, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to build confidence with lace techniques.

Design and Construction

This rectangular shawl features an allover lace pattern with staggered motifs that resemble candlelights. The lace design is set against a Stockinette stitch background, and the strategic placement of the motifs creates gentle medallion shapes that flow throughout the length of the shawl. The pattern's repeating structure means that as you progress through the project, the lace becomes more intuitive and easier to work, making it an excellent choice for intermediate knitters developing their lace skills.

Yarn and Materials

The Candlelight Shawl is designed to be knit with a kid mohair and silk blend yarn in lace weight. When worked on larger needles than typically used for lace-weight yarn, this fiber blend produces a warm yet airy and light fabric with a luxurious feel. The combination of kid mohair and silk creates the frothy, silky texture characteristic of this design.

Stitches and Techniques

  • Stockinette Stitch: Forms the background fabric, providing contrast to the lace motifs
  • Lace Stitches: Allover lace pattern with staggered candlelight-inspired motifs
  • Lace Pattern Format: Instructions provided in both charted and written formats, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method

Customization and Finished Dimensions

The length of the shawl stole is easily adjustable by working more or fewer repeats of the lace pattern, allowing you to customize the finished size to your preferences. The finished measurements begin at approximately 18½ inches in width, with length determined by the number of pattern repeats you choose to work.

Skill Level

Designed for intermediate knitters, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic knitting techniques and introduces or reinforces lace-knitting skills through repetitive pattern work.
