Twisted Lattice Shawl #279 by SweaterBabe.com
Project Overview
The Twisted Lattice Shawl #279 is a generously sized triangular knit shawl designed as the ultimate portable blanket. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked from the top down in one continuous piece, creating a finished wingspan of approximately 66 inches (167.5 cm) and a height of 33 inches (84 cm) measured along the center spine.
What Is Being Made
This is a top-down triangular shawl that combines simplicity with sophisticated texture. The design progresses from a straightforward stockinette section in the upper portion to an elaborate twisted lattice border that showcases advanced stitch techniques. The shawl is finished with garter stitch edging knit throughout, beginning with the simple garter stitch tab method for easy cast-on.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Top-down construction: The shawl is knit from the top down in one piece, allowing for easy adjustments to finished size
- Garter stitch tab method: Used to begin the project with a clean, simple edge
- Cable crosses: Featured prominently in the twisted lattice border for dimensional texture
- Charted stitch patterns: The border stitch pattern is provided in chart format only, requiring intermediate-level chart reading skills
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch: Forms the main body of the shawl, creating a smooth foundation
- Reverse Stockinette stitch: Used as the background for the twisted lattice border, providing contrast to the cable crosses
- Garter stitch: Creates the edging throughout the shawl and serves as the foundation for the tab cast-on
- Cable crosses: The signature element of the twisted lattice border, creating the textured, dimensional design
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This shawl is designed to be knit in DK-weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition to showcase the full beauty of the textured stitch patterns, particularly the twisted lattice border and cable work. The DK weight is ideal for bringing out the intricate details of both the smooth stockinette sections and the complex charted border pattern. Standard knitting needles appropriate for DK-weight yarn are required, along with a yarn shop directory available through SweaterBabe.com for sourcing materials.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated at the intermediate knitting level, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle cable work and chart reading. The progression from simple stockinette to more complex twisted lattice techniques provides a satisfying skill-building experience.
