1:6th Scale Man's Aran Cardigan by Frances Powell
What Is Being Made
This is a miniature Aran cardigan designed to fit a 32.5 cm (13-inch) tall doll, created by designer Frances Powell. The finished cardigan measures approximately 12 cm (4½ inches) from neck to hem with a 7.5 cm (3-inch) chest width and 12 cm (4½-inch) sleeves. The garment is a classic cardigan style with a structured Aran knit pattern, featuring optional pockets and cuffs that can be omitted based on maker preference.
Techniques Used
This advanced-level knitting project employs traditional Aran knitting techniques, which are characterized by raised textural patterns created through cable work and specialized stitches. The pattern utilizes cable techniques extensively, requiring the use of a cable needle to create the signature twisted and braided effects that define Aran knitwear. The cardigan construction involves working individual pieces that are later assembled, with provisions for adding button closures and optional finishing details such as ribbed cuffs and functional pockets.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates several key stitches and cable variations:
- Knit and Purl stitches – fundamental stitches forming the base structure
- Rib stitches – used for gauge measurement and likely for cuffs and waistbands
- Cable 2 Back (C2B) – created by slipping one stitch onto a cable needle, holding it at the back of the work, knitting one stitch, then knitting the stitch from the cable needle
- Cable 2 Forward (C2F) – created by slipping one stitch onto a cable needle, holding it at the front of the work, knitting one stitch, then knitting the stitch from the cable needle
- Knit into Back (kB1) – a twisted stitch variation that adds texture
These cable and twisted stitches create the dimensional Aran patterns characteristic of this traditional Irish knitting style.
Materials Required
The project requires size 2 mm (US size 0) knitting needles, which are appropriately fine for working at 1:6th scale. The yarn specified is 3-ply wool in a quantity of 25 grams, providing sufficient yardage for the miniature garment. Additional materials include a cable needle for executing cable stitches, 2 safety pins or stitch holders for managing active stitches during construction, and 5 small buttons for the cardigan front closure.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, reflecting the technical demands of working at miniature scale combined with the complexity of Aran cable work. Knitters must be proficient with cable techniques, comfortable working with very fine needles and yarn, and capable of maintaining consistent gauge at a small scale. The intricate stitch patterns and precise finishing required make this suitable for experienced knitters.
