1:12th Scale Winter Christening Set by Frances Powell
Project Overview
This is an advanced miniature knitting pattern collection designed for experienced knitters creating a complete christening ensemble for dolls house dolls measuring 2 inches to 2½ inches (5 to 6 cm) tall. The set comprises four coordinated pieces: a christening robe, shawl, bonnet, and pilch knickers. This is explicitly noted as unsuitable for first-time miniature knitting attempts, requiring significant skill in working with extremely fine yarns and tiny needles.
Garments Included
- Christening Robe: The main dress piece of the set, finished at 2½ inches (6 cm) high by ¾ inch (2 cm) wide
- Shawl: A complementary wrap piece for the complete christening look
- Bonnet: A delicate head covering to complete the formal ensemble
- Pilch Knickers: Traditional undergarment piece for authentic period dressing
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs traditional hand-knitting techniques appropriate for miniature garment construction. The project requires proficiency in working at an extremely fine scale, manipulating delicate 1-ply wool with precision. Techniques include shaping garment pieces to fit a doll's proportions, creating fitted bodices and skirts, and constructing tailored bonnets. The pattern involves standard knitting construction methods adapted for dolls house scale, including finishing techniques such as seaming, ribbing attachment, and ribbon insertion for waistbands and bonnet ties.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
All pieces are worked in 1-ply wool in a cobweb weight, the finest yarn category, requiring exceptional control and attention. Yarn requirements are minimal due to the miniature scale:
- Christening robe: 55 yards (50 metres) of 1-ply wool
- Shawl: 68 yards (62 metres) of 1-ply wool
- Bonnet: 13 yards (12 metres) of 1-ply wool
- Pilch knickers: 13 yards (12 metres) of 1-ply wool
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles for standard dolls house dolls. An alternative needle size of size 21 (0.80 mm) knitting needles is specified for use with Heidi Ott baby dolls on all items except the shawl, allowing pattern adaptation for different doll brands and proportions. A 1 mm crochet hook is required for the christening robe construction.
Additional Materials
Beyond yarn and needles, the set requires ribbon for waistbands on both the robe and knickers, and thin ribbon measuring 18 inches (½ metre) for bonnet ties. Lining material for the skirt is listed as optional, allowing knitters to choose whether to add a fabric lining to the christening robe for a more authentic finish.
Skill Level and Suitability
This pattern is designated for experienced knitters only. Miniature knitting at this scale—using cobweb-weight yarn and needles smaller than 1 mm—demands advanced technical skills, steady hands, excellent eyesight or magnification, and extensive prior experience with fine-gauge knitting. The pattern is not recommended as an introduction to miniature knitting techniques.
