1:12th Scale Piano Runner by Frances Powell

What is Being Made

This is a miniature crocheted piano runner designed for 1:12th scale dollhouse upright pianos. The finished piece measures approximately 6 inches in length and 1 inch in width (excluding decorative tassels), making it an authentic-scale accessory for dollhouse interiors. Piano runners are traditional decorative textiles placed across the top of pianos, and this pattern recreates that classic home décor element in miniature form.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This advanced-level crochet project employs fundamental crochet stitches worked in rows to create the runner's structure. The pattern utilizes the following stitches:

  • Treble crochet (tr) – a tall stitch that forms the primary fabric structure
  • Half treble crochet (htr) – a medium-height stitch for varied texture and shaping
  • Double crochet (dc) – used for added detail and density
  • Chain (ch) – foundation stitches and chain spaces for openwork elements
  • Slip stitch (sl) – for joining rounds and securing stitches

The pattern is worked in rows rather than in the round, creating a linear construction method suitable for the runner's elongated rectangular shape. Chain spaces and chain loops from previous rounds are incorporated into the design, allowing for lacy or decorative openwork sections typical of vintage piano runners.

Materials Required

This miniature project requires specialized fine materials appropriate for 1:12th scale work:

  • Crochet hook: 0.40 mm – an extremely fine hook necessary for working with delicate thread at miniature scale
  • Yarn/Thread: No. 100 crochet thread or fine sewing cotton – thread-weight materials that allow for precise, detailed stitching at dollhouse scale

The gauge is noted as not critical for this project, as miniature pianos can vary in size. This flexibility allows crafters to adjust the finished dimensions slightly to fit their specific dollhouse piano.

Pattern Notes

The pattern uses UK crochet terminology throughout. US crocheters should note the following conversions: UK double crochet (dc) equals US single crochet; UK treble (tr) equals US double crochet; UK half treble (htr) equals US half double crochet. The term "miss" in UK patterns corresponds to "skip" in US terminology. This is an independent designer pattern from Buttercup Miniatures (reference CP 50), created by Frances Powell in 2011.
