Tiny scrap of material to make bag for lavender. A few dried lavender flowers.
Finished size: approx ¾-inch/2 cm diameter.
Gauge – Rounds 1-2 = ¼-inch/0.75 cm diameter approx.
1:12th Scale Lavender Sachets by Frances Powell
What is Being Made
These are miniature decorative lavender sachets designed for 1:12th scale dollhouse settings. Each finished sachet measures approximately ¾-inch (2cm) in diameter, making them perfectly proportioned for doll house interiors and displays. The sachets are functional decorative pieces that can hold actual dried lavender flowers, adding authentic detail and fragrance to miniature room settings.
Crochet Techniques Used
This advanced-level crochet project employs precision techniques essential for working at miniature scale. The pattern requires careful tension control and the ability to work with extremely fine materials to achieve the delicate proportions needed for dollhouse accessories. The crocheter must understand how hook size directly impacts finished dimensions—for example, using a 0.60 mm hook instead of the recommended 0.40 mm hook will increase the sachet width by ¼ inch (0.5 cm), which translates to a 3-inch (7 cm) difference in real-life scale.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches adapted for miniature work, including:
- Chain stitches (ch) – for foundation and structural elements
- Double crochet (dc) – primary stitch for building fabric density
- Half treble crochet (htr) – for varied texture and shaping
- Treble crochet (tr) – for creating lighter, more open sections
- Double treble (dtr) – for extended stitch heights where needed
- Slip stitches (sl) – for joining rounds and finishing edges
The pattern works in rounds, with the first two rounds establishing a gauge of approximately ¼-inch (0.75 cm) diameter. Repeat instructions are provided using bracket notation to clarify pattern sequences.
Materials and Tools
Creating these miniature sachets requires specialized materials suited to fine-scale work:
- Crochet hook: 0.40 mm hook is recommended for the proper scale; alternative sizes (such as 0.60 mm) can be used with the understanding that they will proportionally enlarge the finished piece
- Thread: Good quality mercerised cotton sewing thread such as Sylko or Gutermann silk thread in No. 100 or 80 weight provides the fine gauge necessary for 1:12th scale work; using heavier crochet cotton will result in larger sachets
- Ribbon: 6 inches (18 cm) of very thin ribbon for finishing and decoration
- Filling materials: A tiny scrap of thin material to create a small bag that holds the dried lavender flowers, allowing the sachet to be both decorative and subtly fragrant
- Embellishment: A few dried lavender flowers for authentic miniature detail
Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements
This pattern is classified as advanced difficulty, reflecting the precision and control required when crocheting at 1:12th scale. Crafters working on this project should have solid foundational crochet skills and experience managing tension with fine materials. The ability to read pattern abbreviations and understand how to adjust hook sizes based on desired finished dimensions is essential for success.
