Approximate finished size: 1-inch/2.5 cm wide at waist, sleeve 1¾-inches/4.5 cm long, neck to hem – 4¼-inches/10.5 cm.
To fit a 5½-inch/14 cm tall dolls house doll.

The collar overlaps and tucks through a loop to form a bow, this makes it easier for a doll to be inserted into the dress.
1:12th Scale Ladies Knitted Dress c. 1935
What Is Being Made
This is a miniature knitted dress designed by Frances Powell for 1:12th scale dolls house dolls, specifically sized to fit 5½-inch (14 cm) tall dolls. The dress recreates a 1935-era ladies garment in authentic proportions, featuring a fitted bodice, long sleeves, and a full skirt with a belt detail. The finished dress measures approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide at the waist, with sleeves 1¾ inches (4.5 cm) long and a total length from neck to hem of 4¼ inches (10.5 cm).
Techniques Used
This advanced-level knitting project employs fundamental miniature knitting techniques scaled down to accommodate extremely fine needlework. The pattern uses stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) as the primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of 1935 fashion. The bodice incorporates ribbed knitting, created by alternating knit and purl stitches within rows (k 1, p 1 pattern), which provides elasticity and shaping. Shaping is achieved through increases (working twice into a single stitch to create 2 stitches) and decreases (knit 2 stitches together to form 1 stitch), allowing the designer to construct the fitted bodice and shaped skirt sections.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming one half of stocking stitch
- Purl stitch (p) – the complementary stitch forming the reverse side of stocking stitch
- Stocking stitch (sst) – one row knit, next row purl, creating the smooth fabric base
- Ribbed stitch – alternating knit and purl stitches (k 1, p 1) for the bodice section
- Increase (inc) – working twice into the next stitch to make 2 stitches, used for shaping
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – decreasing by combining two stitches into one, used for fitted shaping
Materials and Tools
This project requires Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 00000) knitting needles, among the finest needles available for advanced miniature work. The yarn is 1-ply yarn in cobweb weight, totaling 65 yards (62.5 metres) – an extremely delicate yarn suitable for creating garments at 1:12th scale. Additional materials include a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction and a small buckle or ring to serve as a decorative belt detail, adding authentic period styling to the finished dress.
Note: The pattern indicates that gauge is not critical for dolls house dolls, as individual dolls vary greatly in size and proportions, allowing crafters flexibility in their finished results.
