1:12th Scale Ladies Coat Set (c. 1960s) by Frances Powell
Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern collection from designer Frances Powell features a complete 1960s-inspired wardrobe for 5½-inch (14 cm) tall dolls house dolls. The set includes four coordinating pieces: a fitted coat, a matching hat, a pleated skirt, and a sleeveless jumper. Designed with intermediate-level knitting skills in mind, this pattern showcases the precision and delicate craftsmanship required for miniature garment construction.
The Coat
The centerpiece of this collection is a tailored ladies coat featuring classic 1960s styling. The coat is constructed using size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles for the main body, with size 14 (2.00 mm/US size 0) needles reserved for the trim work. The pattern requires 81 yards (75 metres) of 1-ply wool in the main colour and 14 yards (12.5 metres) of 1-ply wool in a contrast colour. Stitch holders are used during construction to manage stitches during shaping. The trim application demonstrates professional finishing techniques appropriate to the 1960s aesthetic, with the contrast colour providing period-accurate detail work.
The Hat
Complementing the coat, the hat pattern uses the same size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles and requires only 6 yards (5 metres) of 1-ply wool in contrast colour. The hat incorporates decorative elements including thin cord or contrast wool to form trim and bow, adding authentic vintage embellishment typical of 1960s millinery design.
The Skirt
The pleated skirt component is knitted on size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) needles and calls for 28 yards (25 metres) of 1-ply wool in contrast colour. The pattern includes optional elastic for waistband construction, allowing knitters to choose between traditional knitted waistband shaping or elastic reinforcement for improved fit and durability on a miniature garment.
The Sleeveless Jumper
The coordinating sleeveless jumper is constructed using size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles and requires 28 yards (25 metres) of 1-ply wool in the main colour, with a small amount of wool in contrast colour for the neckline. This layering piece demonstrates how to incorporate colour blocking and neckline detailing in miniature garment design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The entire set is worked in cobweb-weight 1-ply wool, the finest yarn classification suitable for dolls house scale work. This ultra-fine yarn weight is essential for achieving the proper proportions and drape expected in 1:12th scale garments. The total yardage for the complete set is 108 yards, demonstrating the minimal material requirements for miniature knitting projects. Knitters will need size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) needles as the primary tool, with size 14 (2.00 mm/US size 0) needles reserved for trim work where slightly larger stitches provide definition and contrast.
Techniques and Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters possess foundational skills including basic stitch construction, shaping through increases and decreases, and the ability to work with stitch holders. The pattern demonstrates several advanced miniature knitting techniques: managing extremely fine yarn and needles, maintaining consistent tension across multiple small pieces, colour work integration, and professional trim application. The inclusion of multiple coordinating garments requires knitters to understand how to scale and proportion pieces that work together as a cohesive set.
Design Heritage
Created by Frances Powell and copyrighted in 2011, this pattern reflects authentic 1960s fashion silhouettes adapted for dolls house scale. The structured coat with contrasting trim, the coordinating hat with bow detail, the pleated skirt, and the sleeveless jumper together create a period-appropriate wardrobe that captures the elegance and tailoring of early 1960s women's fashion in miniature form.
