Product Description
Written pattern.
This pattern is NOT suitable as a first project in miniature knitting, as the pattern has many possible variations.
Materials required: Size 21 (0.80 mm) knitting needles, fine cable needle, No 80 crochet cotton or No 70 tatting thread (approx ½-¾ of a 5 g ball. Note: the dress will be slightly smaller if knitted with No 70 tatting thread), 4 small buttons or beads, stitch holders or safety pins, approx 12 inches/30 cm very narrow ribbon for sailor collar version and optional neck tie on collared version.
Gauge is not important as dolls vary in size.
There are four versions for the dress given in this pattern, which can be mixed and matched according to choice. The same basic dress pattern is used and may be knitted with or without sleeves, and with a choice of four collar styles-plain round neck, full round collar (popular in the 1920’s and 1930’s), cut away round collar for a ribbon tied at neck and a Sailor style collar (popular in the Edwardian era).
1:12th Scale Girl's Dresses by Frances Powell
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates miniature dresses sized to fit 4-inch (10 cm) tall dolls house dolls, spanning historical styles from the Edwardian era through present day. The pattern offers multiple design variations, allowing crafters to customize their finished pieces by selecting from different sleeve options and four distinct collar styles, making each dress unique and historically authentic to its intended period.
Pattern Variations and Design Options
The pattern provides a versatile base dress design that can be mixed and matched to create four different dress versions. Crafters may choose to knit the dress with or without sleeves, and select from four collar style options: a plain round neck, a full round collar (popular during the 1920s and 1930s), a cut-away collar, and a sailor collar version. This modular approach allows experienced miniature knitters to create an entire wardrobe of historically varied pieces from a single pattern.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced-level pattern is designed exclusively for experienced knitters and is explicitly noted as unsuitable for beginners in miniature knitting. The pattern incorporates multiple possible variations throughout the design, requiring knitters to make strategic decisions about construction methods. The dress construction utilizes standard knitting techniques adapted for extreme miniature scale, including shaping methods necessary for fitted garments on tiny dolls. Stitch holders or safety pins are required during construction, indicating the pattern involves techniques such as set-in sleeves or complex neckline shaping that demand intermediate to advanced skill levels.
Materials and Tools Required
Creating these miniature dresses demands specialized equipment suited to working at 1:12th scale. Knitters will need Size 21 (0.80 mm) knitting needles—among the smallest standard needles available—and a fine cable needle for any cable work incorporated into the design. The yarn choice significantly affects the final garment size: No. 80 crochet cotton or No. 70 tatting thread is specified, with approximately ½ to ¾ of a 5-gram ball required for completion. The pattern notes that dresses knitted with No. 70 tatting thread will be slightly smaller than those made with No. 80 crochet cotton, allowing crafters to fine-tune fit. Additional materials include 4 small buttons or beads for closures, approximately 12 inches (30 cm) of very narrow ribbon for the sailor collar version and optional neckties on collared versions, and stitch holders or safety pins for managing stitches during construction.
Skill Level and Suitability
Marked as an advanced difficulty pattern, this design is intended for experienced knitters with prior experience in miniature knitting projects. The complexity arises from the pattern's numerous design variations, the extreme fineness of materials required, and the precision demanded when working with 0.80 mm needles and thread-weight yarn. This is not a suitable introductory project for those new to miniature knitting, as it requires established skills in tension control, reading complex pattern instructions, and managing intricate shaping at a very small scale.
