Product Description
Written pattern
This is NOT suitable for a first project in miniature knitting.
NOTE: This sweater looks best when displayed on a doll, due to the large amount of cables, which cause a ribbed effect if not stretched out. The collar may need to be kept in place by a small stitch at the centre back.
Materials required: size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles, 1 stitch holder, cable needle, 55 yards/50 metres 1-ply wool.
Approximate finished size: 1½-inches/4 cm across chest by 2½-inches/6 cm tall.
Gauge – Gauge is not important as dolls house dolls vary greatly in size.
1:12th Scale Aran Sweater 6 by Frances Powell
Project Overview
This is an advanced miniature knitting pattern designed by Frances Powell for creating a man's Aran sweater scaled to fit 5½ to 6-inch (14-15 cm) tall dolls house dolls. The finished sweater measures approximately 1½ inches (4 cm) across the chest and 2½ inches (6 cm) in height. This downloadable PDF pattern is intended for experienced miniature knitters and is not suitable as a first project in miniature knitting.
Techniques and Stitches
The pattern employs traditional Aran knitting techniques, which are characterized by decorative cable and textured stitch work. Key techniques used in this design include:
- Cable stitches: Twisted cable techniques created using a cable needle to manipulate stitch order and create dimensional patterns
- Tw2B (Twist 2 Back): A twisted stitch worked by knitting into the front of the second stitch from the needle, then into the back of the first stitch
- Tw2F (Twist 2 Front): A complementary twisted stitch worked by knitting into the back of the second stitch from the needle, then into the front of the first stitch
- Basic knit and purl stitches: Fundamental stitches combined to create texture and structure
- Increases: Shaping techniques achieved by working twice into a single stitch
Materials and Tools
Creating this miniature Aran sweater requires specialized materials suited to extremely fine-scale work:
- Knitting needles: Size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) needles—exceptionally fine needles required for working at 1:12th scale
- Yarn: 55 yards (50 meters) of 1-ply wool in cobweb or thread weight, the finest yarn weights available for miniature projects
- Additional tools: One stitch holder and a cable needle for managing stitches and creating cable patterns
Design Notes
The pattern includes important construction and finishing guidance. The sweater displays best when worn on a doll, and the collar may require a small stitch at the centre back to keep it in place during display. Gauge is noted as not critical for this project, as dolls house dolls vary considerably in size, allowing for some flexibility in finished dimensions. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and includes detailed repeat instructions for executing the decorative cable and twisted stitch elements characteristic of Aran design.
