Pattern #1036 Parrish: Stranded Colorwork Hat and Fingerless Mitts Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman

Pattern #1036 Parrish, designed by Julie Turjoman and published by Valley Yarns, is an intermediate-level knitting pattern that produces a coordinating set of a stranded colorwork beanie and fingerless mitts. Inspired by traditional Bohus designs, this gender-neutral set blends stranded colorwork with a slip stitch technique to create a richly textured, visually striking accessory pair. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF.

Design Overview and Inspiration

The Parrish set draws on the heritage of Bohus knitting, a Swedish tradition celebrated for its use of angora-blend yarns and intricate colorwork combining knit and purl stitches on the right side of the fabric. Julie Turjoman adapts this aesthetic into an approachable, versatile design that works beautifully across a wide variety of color combinations. The interplay of stranded colorwork and a simple slip stitch pattern gives the finished fabric a dimensional, almost woven appearance without requiring advanced colorwork skills.

Garments Included

  • Fingerless Mitts — worked in sizes S/M and L/XL, with a finished hand circumference of 7¼ (8¾) inches at the palm. The sample shown is in size S/M.
  • Beanie — worked in sizes S, M, and L, with finished circumferences of 17½ (20¼, 21¾) inches. The sample shown is in size M at 20¼ inches.

Techniques Used

Both the mitts and the beanie are constructed using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-in-the-round method, making them ideal for knitters who prefer to avoid seaming. Key techniques throughout the pattern include:

  • Stranded colorwork — carrying multiple yarn colors across rounds to create the Bohus-inspired patterned bands
  • Slip stitch patterning — a novel combination of knit and purl stitches visible on the right side of the work, offering an approachable variation on traditional colorwork
  • Stripes — color changes worked in rounds to define the decorative bands
  • Magic Loop method — an option for working small circumferences on a long circular needle, alongside the traditional double-pointed needle (dpn) method
  • Waste yarn thumb gusset — a 12-inch strand of smooth waste yarn is used to hold thumb stitches on the mitts, a clean and practical technique for fingerless glove construction

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch — the primary fabric stitch, worked in the round
  • Knit and purl combinations — used within the colorwork chart to create the distinctive Bohus-inspired texture on the right side of the fabric
  • Ribbing — referenced for cuff and brim finishing
  • Colorwork chart stitches — a 14-round colorwork chart is worked once across the patterned section of both the mitts and the beanie

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is written specifically for Valley Yarns Sunderland, a DK-weight yarn made from 100% Baby Alpaca, available in 50g/109-yard skeins. The alpaca fiber gives the finished accessories a soft, luxurious drape and warmth. Three colors are used:

  • MC (Main Color): 2 balls in Med Gray
  • CC1 (Contrast Color 1): 1 ball in Plum
  • CC2 (Contrast Color 2): 1 ball in Pacific Teal
