Product Description

Zaphira Shawl by Melanie Mielinger
What is Being Made
Zaphira is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl designed by independent designer Melanie Mielinger. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a triangular shawl with finished measurements of approximately 56 inches (140 cm) in length and 18.5 inches (46 cm) in depth at the deepest point. The shawl is worked from a small cast-on that gradually increases to create a classic crescent or triangular silhouette.
Knitting Techniques
The Zaphira shawl employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern begins with a small two-stitch cast-on and uses strategic increases to shape the garment. The construction involves working flat on circular needles, with increases worked at the edges to create the expanding triangular form. The pattern is divided into distinct sections, with Part 1 establishing the foundational increases and Part 2 introducing stitch pattern details through charted instructions. Blocking is recommended after completion to achieve the specified gauge and finished measurements.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch: The primary stitch throughout the shawl, created by knitting every row, providing a textured, reversible fabric
- Knit front and back (kfb): An increase technique used to expand the stitch count
- Slip stitch (sl1): Used at the beginning of rows for a finished edge
- Charted stitch patterns: Part 2 introduces stitch work from Chart A, adding visual interest and texture variation
Materials and Tools
Yarn: One ball of sock yarn in 4 ply weight (100 grams / 420 meters). The recommended fiber content is 75% wool and 25% polyamide, providing durability and elasticity suitable for a shawl.
Needles and Notions: US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needle for the main knitting, plus a cable needle for any cable stitches that may appear in the charted sections. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, and an optional row counter for tracking progress through the pattern rows.
Gauge
The specified gauge is 27 stitches and 38 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in garter stitch on US 4 (3.5 mm) needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
