Product Description

Worsted Boxy is Boxy's big brother... Much much quicker to make, but equally awesome.

This is a very simple modern sweater, with a very wide body and skinny sleeves. Worked with a worsted weight yarn at a very loose gauge, it is very flattering, drapey and stylish! A little short row section in the shoulders adds an interesting texture to the sleeves.

Directions are given to make a seamless version (worked in the round) or a seamed version (worked back and forth) of the body. The sleeves and the neckband are worked seamlessly in the round in both versions.

**Gauge:**Note: It is very important that you stretch your fabric when blocking, so make sure you measure your swatch after blocking it this way.

14 st and 20 rows to 4 inches on US 9 (5.5mm) needles, in stockinette stitch, after blocking the fabric, really stretching it.

Worsted Boxy Sweater by Joji Locatelli

What Is Being Made

The Worsted Boxy is a knitted sweater designed by Joji Locatelli, featuring a relaxed, boxy silhouette. This garment is engineered to accommodate a wide range of body sizes, with the primary variation among sizes being the overall circumference rather than significant structural changes. The sweater is available in seven size options: XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, and XXXL, with finished body circumferences ranging from 64 inches (160 cm) for the smallest size to 76 inches (190 cm) for the largest sizes.

Sizing and Fit

This design demonstrates thoughtful sizing architecture. Body circumference measurements span from 64 to 76 inches, while sleeve circumference at the elbow ranges from 10 to 14 inches depending on size selection. Sleeve length from elbow to cuff measures between 21½ and 26½ inches across the size range. The pattern notes that the biggest difference among different sizes is the sleeve circumference, making this an inclusive design that works well for various body types while maintaining consistent proportions.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Worsted Boxy employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The primary construction method uses stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. The sweater is constructed with careful shaping details: the body features strategic increases using make-one purl stitches (m1p) positioned at the edges to create subtle shaping. Neckline shaping is accomplished through bind-off techniques, with the pattern specifying bind-offs of varying stitch counts depending on size. The construction includes both right-side (RS) and wrong-side (WS) rows, with specific instructions for shaping the neckline on the right front section.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating the characteristic smooth knit fabric
  • Purl Stitches (P): Used in specific rows, particularly in edge stitches and shaping rows
  • Knit Stitches (K): The foundation of stockinette stitch construction
  • Make-One Purl (m1p): An increase technique used for shaping, positioned strategically to create subtle design lines
  • Bind-Off (BO): Used to finish edges and create neckline shaping

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category that works up relatively quickly and is forgiving for beginner knitters. The pattern accommodates standard knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn. The schematic provided in the pattern (referenced on page 4) offers detailed measurements to guide needle selection and gauge swatching, ensuring proper fit across all seven size options.

Difficulty Level

The Worsted Boxy is classified as a beginner level pattern, making it an excellent introductory project for knitters new to garment construction. The use of straightforward stitches, clear row-by-row instructions, and the forgiving nature of worsted weight yarn combine to create an accessible project that yields a polished, wearable result.
