Pattern 7064 from Hayfield is a knitting pattern offering two classic, versatile designs in one downloadable PDF: a traditional Aran cardigan and a matching Aran waistcoat. Both garments are worked in Hayfield Aran with Wool, a premium aran-weight yarn that combines the warmth and structure of wool with excellent stitch definition — ideal for showcasing the rich textural detail that Aran knitting is celebrated for. The pattern covers a generous size range, from 81/86 cm (32/34 in) up to 132/137 cm (52/54 in) bust/chest, making it accessible to a wide range of knitters and body types, including those who prefer larger sizes.
The cardigan is a full-length, structured garment with set-in or shaped sleeves. Finished actual measurements range from 94 cm (37 in) to 143 cm (56¼ in) across the chest, giving a comfortable, relaxed fit over the stated bust/chest sizes. The full length of the cardigan measures between 60 cm (23¾ in) and 73 cm (28¾ in) depending on size, and the sleeve length ranges from 46 cm (18 in) to 51 cm (20 in), noted as adjustable to suit individual arm length preferences.
The waistcoat is a sleeveless version of the design, offering a slightly longer finished length than the cardigan — ranging from 70 cm (27½ in) to 83 cm (32¾ in) — which gives it an elegant, elongated silhouette. Like the cardigan, it is worked in Hayfield Aran with Wool and shares the same sizing range and actual chest measurements. The waistcoat is an excellent standalone piece that can be layered over shirts, blouses, or lightweight jumpers for a polished, timeless look.
Both garments are worked flat on straight knitting needles and are seamed together on completion — a traditional construction method well suited to structured Aran knitwear. Aran knitting is a richly textured style of hand knitting originating from the Aran Islands of Ireland, characterised by the use of cable stitches, bobbles, and raised textural patterns that create intricate, three-dimensional fabric. These techniques require the knitter to work stitches out of their standard sequence, often using a cable needle to hold stitches at the front or back of the work while others are knitted.
