Product Description

This cute hedgehog uses a knitted loop stitch to make the fuzzy body. You could also make yours as a hedgehog doorstop by adding a weight (for example a bag of gravel) inside the stuffing when making up. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the hedgehog is knitted in aran weight yarns (worsted/10 ply) on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, knitting loops, and seaming to finish.

Tweedy Hedgehog Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry

What Is Being Made

The Tweedy Hedgehog is a charming knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a small stuffed hedgehog figure, perfect for collectors of handmade amigurumi-style toys or as a gift for children and craft enthusiasts.

Craft and Primary Technique

This pattern uses knitting as the primary construction method. The hedgehog is created using flat and three-dimensional knitting techniques to form the body, which is then assembled through seaming. The project falls into the intermediate difficulty category, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic stockinette stitch.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While specific stitch-by-stitch details are not provided in the pattern excerpt, the Tweedy Hedgehog employs standard knitting techniques typical of toy construction. The pattern involves shaping the hedgehog's body through increases and decreases, creating a three-dimensional form. Seaming techniques are essential, as the knitted pieces must be joined together using a darning or tapestry needle to form the complete toy structure. A bobble stitch is used for the nose detail, adding textural interest to the finished piece.

Yarn Materials and Specifications

The Tweedy Hedgehog pattern calls for aran weight yarn (also known as worsted weight or 10 ply). The main body requires approximately 50g each in two complementary yarn shades:

  • Beige shade: Patons Wool Blend Aran (63% wool/37% acrylic) is recommended
  • Brown/Mahogany shade: Rowan Felted Tweed Aran (50% merino wool/25% alpaca/25% viscose) is recommended
  • Grey nose bobble: Hayfield Bonus Aran (100% acrylic) in Dark Grey Mix, requiring approximately one metre

The pattern notes that DK weight yarn (double knitting, light worsted, or 8 ply) can be substituted if aran weight is unavailable. Knitters are encouraged to use similar yarn blends from their stash for the nose bobble, making this an economical project for yarn scraps.

Needles and Notions Required

To complete the Tweedy Hedgehog, you will need:

  • A pair of 4.5mm (US 7) single-pointed needles, with a minimum length of 20cm
  • A darning or tapestry needle for seaming the knitted pieces together
  • A 200g bag of toy filling (polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material) to create the three-dimensional shape
  • Two 5mm black beads for eyes, along with a sewing needle and thread for secure attachment

Pattern Format

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The pattern is the intellectual property of designer Amanda Berry and includes her contact information for questions or support.
