Tweed Vest by Linda Marveng

Project Overview

The Tweed Vest is a knitted garment designed by Linda Marveng, featuring a distinctive silhouette with a long, flattering back and a shorter front. This intermediate-level knitting project combines classic construction techniques with decorative stitch patterning to create a warm, versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions.

What is Being Made

This pattern produces a sleeveless vest with a loose neckline. The garment showcases an asymmetrical design where the back length differs noticeably from the front, creating visual interest and a modern aesthetic. The vest is designed to be worn as a layering piece or standalone garment, offering both warmth and style.

Yarn and Materials

The Tweed Vest is worked in Thomas Kvist Yarns Delicious Tweed, an aran-weight yarn that provides excellent drape and structure. The yarn composition includes cashmere, contributing to the softness and luxury feel of the finished garment. Aran-weight yarn is ideal for creating garments with good stitch definition and relatively quick knitting progress.

Knitting Techniques

The construction employs several fundamental knitting techniques suited to intermediate knitters. The pattern uses circular needles for seamless construction, allowing for efficient working in the round. Increases and decreases are incorporated throughout the pattern, including yarn overs (kastinger) for decorative eyelet details. The garment features ribbed edging to provide structure and elasticity at the neckline and hem areas.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Tweed Vest incorporates multiple stitch techniques to create visual texture and interest:

  • Garter stitch (referred to as "glattstr" in the pattern) for smooth stockinette sections
  • Ribbing (combining knit and purl stitches) for fitted edges and structural elements
  • Yarn overs and decreases to create eyelet details and shaping
  • Foldede Triangler (Folded Triangles) pattern, a design by Lynne Barr that expands as an increasing rib before being folded, adding sophisticated geometric patterning to the vest

Pattern Construction Details

The pattern works systematically through multiple needle sizes and stitch sequences. The construction includes specific row-by-row instructions with repeating pattern sections marked by asterisks. The Foldede Triangler pattern is worked multiple times (at least 3 repetitions noted as "biser") to build the decorative element, with the first 6 rows receiving special attention in the instructions. Bind-off techniques are employed to finish the neckline edge securely.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project requires familiarity with basic knitting techniques including cast-on, knit, purl, yarn overs, decreases, and bind-off methods. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and following row-by-row instructions. The Foldede Triangler pattern adds complexity but is achievable for knitters with some experience managing stitch patterns and shaping.
