Tiny Amy Cardigan by Sarah Ronchetti
What is Being Made
The Tiny Amy is a pretty yet simple-to-knit cardigan designed for premature and newborn infants. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Sarah Ronchetti offers a practical garment perfect for any occasion, featuring elegant cable detailing that works up easily without requiring a cable needle. The cardigan is designed with approximately 1.5 inches (4 centimeters) of ease for a comfortable fit on tiny babies.
Sizes and Fit
The free version of this pattern includes two sizes:
- Premature: 13.5 inches (34.5 centimeters) chest circumference, requiring 220 yards (200 meters) of yarn
- Newborn: 16 inches (40.5 centimeters) chest circumference, requiring 240 yards (220 meters) of yarn
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed to work with DK or light worsted weight yarn, offering flexibility for crafters who may have either weight on hand. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted in Skeinz Urban in Aqua. Recommended needle sizes are 4mm/US size 6 circular needles measuring 80 centimeters or longer, or whatever size is needed to match gauge. Additional notions include 2 spare circular needles or scrap yarn and 4 stitch markers.
Gauge and Tension
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stocking stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper fit for these delicate infant sizes.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Tiny Amy employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern features stocking stitch as the primary fabric base, creating a smooth, classic finish. A distinctive element of this design is the cable detail worked without a cable needle, simplifying the construction process while maintaining visual interest. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 45 stitches for the premature size or 51 stitches for the newborn size, worked flat rather than in the round. Stitch markers are placed during the initial purl row to help organize the pattern sections and maintain consistency throughout the knitting process.
Pattern Format and Difficulty
This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern available as a free downloadable PDF. The straightforward construction and simple cable technique make it accessible to knitters with some experience, while the small yardage requirements and quick gauge make it an ideal project for practicing skills or creating gifts for newborns.
