Product Description

I guess it's possible that you haven't seen all the delicious, chunky blankets and throws that are sprinkled all over Pinterest and the internet. But if you have, and you're kinda craving one this winter, I have a treat for you.

I made this thick, cozy, chunky knit blanket in one day, while binge-watching ‘Nurse Jackie' during Winter Storm ‘Jonas'.  It was a great reason to stay inside and in front of a fire.

Even though I really like natural fibers, I used acrylic in this case because of 1) its washability and 2) its cost.

Thick, Cozy, Chunky Knit Blanket by Nourish and Nestle

What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern creates a substantial throw blanket measuring 56 inches by 60 inches. The finished piece is designed as a cozy, oversized blanket suitable for draping over furniture or using as a personal wrap, featuring a distinctly chunky texture achieved through the use of super bulky yarn and oversized needles.

Yarn and Materials

The blanket requires 14 skeins of Super Bulky (size 6) yarn at 21 yards per skein. The pattern specifically references Loops & Threads Biggie as the yarn used in the designer's sample. Additional materials include white yarn for tassel finishing and transparent thread for wrapping the tassels.

Needles and Tools

This pattern calls for 2 poles measuring 32mm (or 1 1/4 inch) in diameter. The designer notes that alternative tools can be substituted, including broomsticks, PVC piping, US 35 knitting needles (which are smaller than the recommended poles), or US 50 knitting needles (which are larger). For optimal results with this yarn weight and a loose knit appearance, the designer recommends using needles or poles with a diameter of at least 1 inch, with gauge checking recommended before beginning.

Stitches and Techniques

The blanket employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for an intermediate skill level:

  • Cast on: 34 stitches are cast on using the poles; the pattern references instructional video content available on the designer's website for guidance on this cast-on method
  • Ribbing: 1 row of ribbing using alternating knit and purl stitches creates a finished edge
  • Stocking stitch: The remaining rows are worked in stocking stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows), starting and ending each row as specified in the full pattern
  • Tassel finishing: White yarn and transparent thread are used to wrap and finish tassels

Gauge and Sizing

The designer's gauge measures 6 stitches across 4 inches in the chunky knit fabric, with 4 stitches and 5 rows per 6-inch square. Checking gauge before beginning is recommended, as needle or pole diameter directly affects the final fabric density and blanket dimensions.

Pattern Format and Support

This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes video tutorials on the designer's website (www.nourishandnestle.com) demonstrating the cast-on method and the specific technique for knitting with the oversized poles, providing visual guidance for knitters working with these large-scale tools.
