Product Description
The Shawl You’re Looking For is a great pattern to combine yarns that you want to use in a project together but don’t want to actually blend them together. The Star Wars inspired droid yarns I used go together as well as R2-D2, C3PO, and BB-8 do, but they don’t look as beautiful blended together in color work. Changing colors halfway through some of the stripes creates a fun color blocking effect within the striped pattern.
The stripes not only alternate color, but also texture. Stockinette stitch really lets the uniquely dyed yarns shine, while garter stitch solid stripes give the shawl some squish factor. You’ll love how the garter stitch border is knit on, creating a final garter stripe that runs perpendicular to the rest of the garter stitch. It’s that last little detail that elevates the design from simple shawl to casual wardrobe staple.
All three droid yarns I used are by Lazer Sheep Yarns and I highly recommend them. The colorways are R2-Sheep2, Sheep3-PO, and BB-Sheep.

Project Overview
The Shawl You're Looking For is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl pattern designed by Kelly Spenhoff. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 55 inches (140 cm) wide and 24.5 inches (62.5 cm) tall, making it an ideal accessory for layering and everyday wear. The pattern is offered in one size and is suitable for knitters new to shawl construction.
Knitting Techniques and Skills
This shawl pattern incorporates several fundamental knitting techniques that build foundational skills. The pattern requires competency in wrap and turn short rows, a shaping method that creates depth and dimension without increasing stitch counts dramatically. Additional techniques include yarn overs (yo) for decorative lace elements, slip one with yarn in front (sl1wyif) for refined edge finishing, and knit two together through back loops (k2togtbl) for left-leaning decreases. These techniques work together to create the shawl's structured silhouette while maintaining beginner accessibility.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs essential knitting stitches including:
- Knit stitch (k) - the foundational stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl stitch (p) - used for textural variation and reverse stockinette sections
- Yarn over (yo) - creates intentional holes for lace patterning and visual interest
- Decreases (k2togtbl) - shapes the shawl and balances yarn overs for lace motifs
- Slip stitches (sl1wyif) - provides neat, finished edges throughout the piece
Yarn and Materials
The Shawl You're Looking For uses a multi-colored yarn combination totaling approximately 690 yards. The primary yarn is Lion Brand Touch of Merino in black (430 yards from a 257 yards per 100 grams skein), providing the foundational color and structure. Three accent colors come from Lazer Sheep Yarns Lazer Sock: Color B BB-Sheep (150 yards), Color C R2-Sheep2 (55 yards), and Color D Sheep3-PO (55 yards), each from 463 yards per 100 grams skeins. This 4-ply yarn weight creates a lightweight, drapable fabric suitable for shawls.
The pattern requires US 8 circular needles measuring at least 24 inches (61 cm) to accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawl expands. Additional notions include 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping sections, plus a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches (2.5 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving this gauge is essential for the finished shawl to reach its intended dimensions of 55 inches wide by 24.5 inches tall. The single-size construction makes this a straightforward project for beginners seeking a completed accessory without sizing calculations.
