Product Description
In Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, mermaids live a long time, but they have no immortal soul, so upon their death they are turned into the foam and spray upon the waves. Still, the mermaid sacrifices herself for the Prince and her reward is being turned into a spirit and she may earn a soul by doing good deeds.
This half-circle shawl is also quite dramatic like the story! Beads glisten along the edge like the sun on the waves. Three different mesh patterns, in a soft and light yarn, float over your shoulders like sea foam.
The shawl begins with a provisionally cast on garter stitch tab and is worked from the neck down. Increase rows are worked at varying intervals using a method based on Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Pi Shawl. The beaded edging is worked sideways and attached to the live stitches of the shawl body. Both written and charted instructions are included. A photo tutorial for the edging and beading is linkedin the Edging section.
The Mermaid's Gift Knitted Shawl by Tori Gurbisz
What Is Being Made
The Mermaid's Gift is a half-circle knitted shawl designed by Tori Gurbisz and presented by Lachesis and Co. This dramatic shawl draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale The Little Mermaid, capturing the ethereal beauty and sacrifice central to the story. The finished shawl measures 56 inches (142 cm) across the wingspan with a depth of 23 inches (58.5 cm), making it a substantial and elegant accessory suitable for draping over the shoulders.
Design Inspiration and Aesthetic
The shawl's design philosophy centers on the mermaid narrative of transformation and grace. Beads are incorporated along the edge to create a glittering effect reminiscent of sunlight dancing on ocean waves. The overall construction evokes the image of sea foam floating delicately across the shoulders, bringing the literary inspiration to life through textile form.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Patterns
This intermediate-level knitting project features three different mesh patterns that work together to create visual interest and textural variety throughout the shawl. The mesh patterns contribute to the light, airy quality of the finished piece, allowing the fabric to drape gracefully. The combination of multiple stitch patterns requires intermediate knitting skills and familiarity with reading pattern instructions and managing stitch counts across different sections.
Yarn and Materials
The Mermaid's Gift is worked in lace-weight yarn, which is exceptionally fine and delicate. This yarn weight choice is essential to achieving the soft, flowing aesthetic that characterizes the design. The lace-weight yarn creates an open, ethereal fabric that lives up to the sea foam inspiration. Beads are used as embellishments along the shawl's edge, adding sparkle and dimension to the finished piece.
Gauge and Needle Considerations
The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. However, the designer notes that gauge is not crucial to this particular project, offering flexibility for individual knitter preferences. Knitters who tend to work tightly or prefer a more open fabric are encouraged to increase needle size by one to two sizes from the pattern recommendation. As with any knitting project, swatching and blocking the swatch before beginning the full project is recommended to ensure satisfaction with the final fabric texture and drape.
Skill Level
This shawl is rated as an intermediate difficulty project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and shaping. The combination of three different mesh patterns and the half-circle construction require attention to detail and comfort with pattern reading.
