Product Description
UPDATE December 2024: Since I published The Big Unseamly Beanie about 10 years ago, many, many makers have come up with methods of making the crochet joining seam less visible. Check out videos on YouTube to find ones that you might like. They’ll all work with this very basic, classic roll-brim hat.
One recent development is that more people are using a ch1 as the beginning chain for double crochet. (This pattern uses a ch2.) I tried the ch1 with this pattern, and I was amazed by the result. The join REALLY disappears. So, try it out on your next Big Unseamly Beanie!
The Big Unseamly Beanie is worked in super bulky yarn from the top down in joined rounds, and the method used to join the rounds is not as obvious as some crochet joins (in my opinion, anyway...).
The beginner-friendly pattern offers written instructions using U.S. crochet terms.
The Big Unseamly Beanie by Elvee Dickinson
What Is Being Made
The Big Unseamly Beanie is a crocheted winter hat designed by Elvee Dickinson. This beginner-friendly beanie features a distinctive wide turn-up brim that provides both style and practical warmth. The hat is available in three sizes to fit head circumferences ranging from 20 to 24 inches (51 to 61 centimeters), making it suitable for extra small through extra large head sizes.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This design showcases the efficiency of working with super-bulky yarn, allowing crafters to complete a full winter hat in minimal time. The beanie is constructed as a seamless piece, which aligns with its name—the "unseamly" construction eliminates the need for finishing seams. The wide turn-up brim is created through the crocheted fabric itself and is folded to create the finished cuff effect, adding both visual interest and insulation.
The pattern is designed so that the finished circumference matches the actual head size of the wearer, accounting for the natural thickness of the super-bulky yarn and the folded cuff. This thoughtful sizing approach ensures a proper fit without excessive stretching or bunching.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) — foundational stitch used to establish the base of the hat
- Double Crochet (dc) — primary stitch that forms the body of the beanie, creating dense, warm fabric
Materials Required
Yarn: Super-chunky weight yarn is the foundation of this quick-to-make project. The bulky yarn weight dramatically reduces the number of stitches and rows needed, making this an ideal beginner project.
Hook and Notions: A Size N/P-15 (10 mm) crochet hook is required to obtain proper gauge with the super-chunky yarn. A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends and any finishing details.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 6.6 double crochets over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in the specified yarn and hook size. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the hat fits correctly, particularly given the sizing method that relies on matching head circumference.
Finished Measurements
- Circumference: 20, 22, or 24 inches (51, 56, or 61 centimeters) depending on size selected
- Depth: Approximately 12 inches (30.5 centimeters)
