Product Description

A colorful summer project for just few hours. This teapot coaster with leaves was crocheted in Overlay Crochet technique. This technique is usually addressed to advanced crocheters but I personally think that advanced beginners can also master it with minor problems.

Pattern is written for one size (10 pages) containing written instructions and lots of pictures describing the most tricky and hard rounds. There is also stitch guide included explaining how every stitch should be made.

Crochet level: Intermediate (front post stitches are used in this pattern), though an “adventurous” beginner can handle it!

Materials: Sport yarn of 5 colours. (80 - 100 yards (73 - 91 m) in total)

Please, let me know if you would like to get a printer friendly copy of this pattern with no pictures. Thank you!

Teapot Coaster with Leaves Overlay Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

This is a decorative crochet coaster designed for table settings, specifically created to complement teapots and hot beverages. The pattern features a base coaster structure with an overlay of leaves, adding visual interest and botanical detail to a functional home accessory. The finished piece serves as both a practical heat-protective surface and an aesthetic table decoration.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created entirely using crochet, a fiber craft that uses a single hook to form interlocking loops of yarn. Crochet is ideal for creating textured, dimensional pieces like this coaster, as it allows for varied stitch heights and decorative overlays. The leaves overlay technique adds depth and visual complexity to what might otherwise be a simple circular or square base, demonstrating intermediate-level crochet skills.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs a range of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build structure and texture:

  • Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create starting loops and connecting elements
  • Slip Stitch (slst) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Single Crochet (sc) – a short, tight stitch that provides density and structure
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch offering balanced coverage
  • Double Crochet (dc) – a taller stitch used for drape and lighter texture
  • Treble Crochet (tr) – an even taller stitch for openwork or flowing sections
  • Double Crochet 4 Together (dc4tog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count while maintaining structure
  • Front Post Treble Crochet 2 Together (FPtr2tog) – an advanced decrease that works around the post of stitches, creating textured, dimensional effects ideal for leaf details

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that produces delicate, refined finished pieces. The designer used Yarnart "Jeans" yarn, a blend of 55% cotton and 45% acrylic, available in 50-gram balls (1.75 ounces) with 160 meters or 146 yards per ball. This fiber content provides breathability from the cotton component while gaining durability and elasticity from the acrylic, making it well-suited for a coaster that will experience regular use and potential moisture exposure.

The yarn features a 5-ply texture (12 wraps per inch), indicating a smooth, medium-twist construction that works well for detailed stitch definition. The pattern specifies five colors of yarn: yellow, pistachio, brown, pink, and gray. This multi-color approach allows crafters to create visual contrast between the coaster base and the leaves overlay, or to blend colors for a more subtle effect.

Tools and Notions

A steel crochet hook in 3 mm size (US size 3) is recommended, though the pattern notes that hook size may be adjusted to achieve the desired gauge. Steel hooks provide durability and precision for detailed work. Additional supplies include scissors for cutting yarn and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, a standard finishing step in crochet projects.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, indicating it is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch combinations and techniques. The use of post stitches, multiple decreases, and the leaves overlay design require comfort with reading patterns and executing varied stitch types, making it an appropriate challenge for those beyond the beginner stage.
