Product Description
The Summerland Triangle Shawl/Scarf is a lightweight and easy to work up project that is perfect to use and wear all year round but, is also designed to be worn during the warmer weather seasons. The pattern uses a cotton blend yarn and the sizing is less bulky than other triangle shawls that can also be worn as a scarf.
This pattern includes very detailed instructions for the 4 row repeat design of the pattern and it uses basic stitches such as the slst, sc, hdc and dc. You will also need to know how to do the “3rd Loop” hdc and start the project using the Magic Circle technique. You will require an L Hook and one of the new, larger 530yd Caron Cotton Cakes to make this Triangle Shawl/Scarf. There will be enough yarn left over to make tassels if you wish to add them to the shawl/scarf - instructions on how to make tassels are provided.
Summerland Triangle Scarf Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Summerland Triangle Scarf is a crocheted shawl designed by In Stitches that works up into a large triangular wrap. This versatile accessory can be worn as either a traditional triangle shawl or styled as a scarf, making it suitable for various occasions and seasons. When completed with the recommended yarn, the finished piece measures approximately 56 inches across from corner to corner and approximately 26.5 inches from the top edge to the bottom point, creating a generous triangular silhouette perfect for layering or draping.
Difficulty Level and Project Scope
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with slightly more complex stitch combinations and shaping techniques. The project uses a downloadable PDF format, allowing crafters to work at their own pace with detailed instructions and stitch guidance.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
The Summerland Triangle Scarf employs fundamental crochet techniques adapted for shawl construction. The pattern utilizes the following stitches:
- Magic circle (mc) - Used to create the starting point for the triangular shape
- Chain stitch (ch) - Forms the foundation and increases throughout the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) - Provides structure and detail work
- Half double crochet (hdc) - Creates the primary fabric and contributes to the shawl's drape
A key technique featured in this pattern involves stitching into the "3rd loop" of previous rows to create distinctive ridged loops that define the shawl's structure. This method of stitch placement adds visual interest and helps establish the triangular shape as the piece grows from the center point outward.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Summerland Triangle Scarf is designed to work beautifully with Caron Cotton Cakes yarn, which provides 530 yards (485 meters) per 8.8-ounce (250-gram) ball. The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that creates a fabric with excellent drape and breathability—ideal for a summer shawl or lightweight scarf.
The complete materials list includes:
- 1 ball of Caron Cotton Cakes yarn (530 yards total)
- Size L (8.00mm) crochet hook
- 4 to 6 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Sizing Information
This pattern features a flexible approach to gauge, as the exact tension does not significantly impact the overall wearability of the finished piece. However, the pattern provides specific measurement checkpoints to ensure proper construction:
- After Row 4: The triangle's width (measured across the top from the ridged loops formed by the 3rd loop stitching) should measure between 6.5 to 7 inches, with a height from the top edge to the point of approximately 2.75 inches
- After Row 8: The width should measure between 12.75 to 13 inches, with a height of approximately 5.25 inches
- Finished dimensions: Approximately 56 inches across corner to corner and 26.5 inches from top to point when using Caron Cotton Cakes yarn
These measurement guidelines help crafters verify their progress and ensure the shawl develops the intended proportions and drape.
