Starlight Pullover by Valerie Hobbs
What is Being Made
The Starlight Pullover is a comfortable and versatile pullover sweater designed for everyday wear, whether for work or casual play. This knitted garment features a classic pullover silhouette available in twelve different sizes, ranging from 30 inches to 52 inches in bust measurement, with finished lengths between 20 and 25.25 inches. The sweater is intended to be worn with 0 to 2 inches of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.
Techniques and Construction
The Starlight Pullover employs several textural techniques to create visual interest throughout the design. Staggered garter rib embellishes the hem and the tops of the sleeves, providing a structured edge and cuff detail. Garter dots add texture to both the body and sleeves, creating a subtle all-over pattern that enhances the sweater's visual appeal while maintaining a wearable, understated aesthetic.
Stitches Used
- Garter rib (staggered placement on hem and sleeve tops)
- Garter dots (textural embellishment on body and sleeves)
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Starlight Pullover requires between 1025 and 1935 yards of DK weight yarn, depending on the chosen size. The pattern accommodates both pure wool and wool blend options. The design is shown in Rowan "Wool Cotton", a 50% merino and 50% cotton blend that offers durability and breathability. This yarn is available at 123 yards per 50-gram ball, making yardage calculations straightforward for yarn substitution.
Needles and Tools
Construction requires U.S. size 5 (3.75mm) straight or circular needles for the main body of the sweater. A U.S. size 5 (3.75mm) circular needle in 16 inches (40cm) or 24 inches (60cm) is needed for working the collar. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size as needed to obtain the correct gauge for their specific yarn choice.
Difficulty Level
The Starlight Pullover is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to work with textural stitch patterns and garment construction techniques.
