Spring is Pink Cardigan by Hanna Maciejewska

What is Being Made

Spring is Pink is a knitted cardigan pattern available in two distinct silhouettes: a cropped version and a longer version. Both styles feature button-front closures and are designed as intermediate-level knitting projects. The pattern offers multiple size options to accommodate various body measurements, making it a versatile wardrobe addition for spring and transitional seasons.

Knitting Techniques Used

This cardigan employs fundamental knitting construction techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The garment is worked using circular needles, which allows for seamless or nearly seamless construction. The pattern incorporates top-down construction methodology, enabling knitters to try on the piece as they work and adjust length as needed. Stitch markers are used throughout to help track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases at key points such as armholes and necklines.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided materials list, the intermediate difficulty rating suggests the cardigan likely incorporates a combination of basic stitches such as knit and purl, possibly including ribbing for cuffs, waistbands, and button bands. The construction method using circular needles indicates stockinette stitch or similar foundational stitch patterns that work well for fitted garments.

Yarn and Materials

Spring is Pink requires DK weight yarn (8 ply, 11 wraps per inch). The yarn should be 100% Wool that knits to the specified gauge at approximately 100 grams per 328 yards (300 meters).

Yardage Requirements by Version:

  • Cropped Version: 2 to 5 skeins, approximately 650 to 1,505 yards (595 to 1,377 meters) depending on size
  • Longer Version: 3 to 6 skeins, approximately 780 to 1,655 yards (714 to 1,513 meters) depending on size
  • Three-Quarter Length Sleeves: Add approximately 200 yards (183 meters) to either version

The sample cardigan was hand-dyed using Alize Pure Wool Cashmira, showcasing the beautiful results possible with quality wool yarns.

Needles and Notions

Knitters will need US 6 (4mm) circular needles in both 47-inch (120cm) and 32-inch (80cm) lengths, or double-pointed needles (DPNs) in the same size, for the main fabric. US 4 (3.5mm) circular needles or DPNs in matching lengths are required for ribbed edgings and cuffs that need a tighter gauge.

Additional notions include 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, 4 locking stitch markers for securing stitches, and buttons ranging from 6 to 12 pieces depending on version and size (1-inch/25mm diameter). A tapestry needle and matching thread complete the finishing requirements.

Skill Level

Designed as an intermediate project, Spring is Pink is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with circular needles and manage garment shaping. The pattern's multiple size options and construction method make it an accessible project for developing knitters seeking to expand their garment-making repertoire.
