Product Description

This intarsia top is a T-shirt at heart with shaping at the sides and shoulders. The underarm sections allow for some adjustment which, if you are feeling adventurous, could be tailored to your personal preference by short row shaping to give a tighter or looser fit in any particular area such as the sleeve, bust or over the hip for example. Also, if you prefer more room in the waist area, omit the side shaping and redraw the lines for your size on the chart.

Although the top is simple in principle, there are quite a few techniques used here. The Zebra fabric is produced entirely in intarsia, but additionally techniques include temporary cast on at the welt and Three Needle Cast Off at the shoulders. The shoulders are shaped with short row shaping to give a neater fit at the cuff and the side panels are joined by grafting.

All in all, a fun top to enjoy this summer – hopefully in the sunshine – just look out for those lions!

Serengeti Zebra Pattern Inspired Knit Tee by Judy Furlong

What Is Being Made

The Serengeti is a knitted T-shirt top featuring a striking zebra stripe pattern inspired design. This intermediate-level garment combines classic tee construction with sophisticated colorwork, making it an eye-catching wearable that showcases advanced knitting techniques. The pattern was originally published in The Knitter, Issue 71 (April 2014), and was featured on the front cover of that issue.

Garment Construction and Shaping

This intarsia top is fundamentally a T-shirt with thoughtful shaping details. The design includes side shaping and shoulder shaping to create a fitted silhouette. The underarm sections are engineered to allow for adjustment and customization, giving knitters the flexibility to tailor the fit to their preferences. For those seeking a more personalized fit, short row shaping can be applied to specific areas such as the sleeve, bust, or hip area to achieve either a tighter or looser fit. Additionally, if a knitter prefers more room in the waist area, the side shaping can be omitted entirely, and the size lines can be redrawn on the chart accordingly.

Techniques and Stitches Used

Although the Serengeti appears simple in its basic T-shirt silhouette, the pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques:

  • Intarsia: The distinctive zebra fabric is produced entirely using the intarsia technique, a method for working with multiple colors in a structured, block-like pattern. This creates clean color transitions and a professional finish.
  • Temporary Cast On: The welt is created using a temporary cast on method, which allows for a clean, flexible edge. Knitters may substitute their preferred cast on method if desired.
  • Three Needle Cast Off: The shoulders are finished using the Three Needle Cast Off technique, which creates a strong, neat seam by binding off two sets of stitches together simultaneously.
  • Stitch Pickup: An alternative construction method allows knitters to pick up stitches for the welt rather than using a temporary cast on, offering flexibility in approach.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Serengeti is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, which provides an ideal balance of drape and stitch definition for displaying the intarsia colorwork pattern. Sport weight yarn allows the zebra stripes to be clearly visible while maintaining a comfortable, breathable fabric suitable for a T-shirt. Standard knitting needles appropriate for sport weight yarn are used throughout the project.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic T-shirt construction is straightforward, the combination of intarsia colorwork, multiple finishing techniques, and the option for customizable shaping makes this an excellent project for knitters who have mastered fundamental techniques and are ready to expand their skills with color work and advanced finishing methods.
