Semplici Mitts by Arancia Cannella

What is Being Made

The Semplici Mitts are a pair of beginner-friendly knitted mittens designed by Arancia Cannella. These are simple, elegant hand coverings available in three adult sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The mittens feature a straightforward construction with a circumference of 15–17 cm and a height of 19–23 cm, depending on the size selected. The design incorporates a beautiful color-blocking technique using three coordinating shades to create visual interest in an otherwise minimalist pattern.

Techniques Used

The Semplici Mitts are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern is worked back and forth on straight needles, meaning each row is knitted individually rather than in the round. Once all pieces are completed, they are sewn together using a tapestry needle to form the finished mittens. This flat-panel construction method is ideal for those new to knitting, as it eliminates the complexity of working with circular needles or managing stitches on multiple needles simultaneously.

The mittens utilize color blocking by introducing new yarn colors at specific points in the pattern. This technique creates distinct horizontal bands of color and adds visual dimension without requiring complex colorwork skills like intarsia or Fair Isle knitting.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row. The pattern begins with 10 rows of garter stitch, which produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch is used for the cuff of the mittens, providing elasticity and a finished edge.
  • Stockinette Stitch: Formed by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows on alternating passes. This is the primary stitch used for the body of the mittens, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture on the right side.

Materials and Gauge

The Semplici Mitts pattern calls for straight needles in 3.5 mm (US size 4). The recommended yarn is DK or worsted weight, providing flexibility in yarn choice. The designer has worked the sample mittens using Mondial Pacos yarn, a luxurious blend of 75% baby alpaca wool and 25% polyamide, in three colorways: white (Color A), grey (Color B), and deep grey (Color C). Each color requires less than one 50 g ball, making this an excellent pattern for using yarn scraps or small quantities of premium fibers.

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 32 rows over 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch. This gauge information is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches the pattern requirements.

Pattern Construction Overview

The mittens are constructed in three distinct sections. The pattern begins with Color A (white) yarn, where 33–37 stitches are cast on depending on size. The first 10 rows are worked in garter stitch to create a textured cuff. The knitter then transitions to stockinette stitch and continues for 14–18 rows in the same white yarn. Next, Color B (grey) yarn is introduced, and the pattern continues in stockinette stitch for 20–24 rows, creating the main body of the mitten. The color-blocking creates a striking visual effect while maintaining the simplicity of basic knitting stitches.

This beginner-appropriate design requires only fundamental knitting knowledge: casting on, knit and purl stitches, and binding off. The straightforward stitch pattern and minimal shaping make the Semplici Mitts an ideal first mittens project for those developing their knitting skills.
