Round Lace Doily by Frances Powell

What is Being Made

This crochet pattern creates delicate round lace doilies suitable for home décor and miniature doll accessories. The design includes two size options: a larger doily measuring approximately 7½ inches (19 cm) in diameter, and a smaller doily measuring approximately 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. These decorative pieces feature intricate lace construction worked in continuous rounds, making them versatile additions to interior design or dollhouse displays.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Round Lace Doily employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern is constructed by working in continuous rounds from the center outward, creating an expanding circular motif. The design utilizes chain spaces and chain loops to form the open lace structure characteristic of traditional doily patterns. Stitch placement and yarn-over techniques create the delicate, openwork aesthetic throughout the piece.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch) – forms the foundation and creates chain spaces
  • Double crochet (dc) – primary stitch for fabric construction
  • Treble crochet (tr) – adds height and creates decorative elements
  • Half treble crochet (htr) – provides intermediate stitch height
  • Double treble (dtr) – creates taller stitch variations
  • Slip stitch (sl) – joins rounds and secures stitches
  • V-stitch (V-st) – a decorative element consisting of 1 treble, 3 chain, 1 treble worked into the same location

Materials and Specifications

For the Large Doily: Approximately 75 yards (70 metres) of No 10 crochet cotton paired with a 1.5 mm crochet hook. The gauge for rounds 1–4 measures 2 inches (5 cm).

Pattern Notes

The pattern uses UK crochet terminology throughout. US crochet readers should note the following conversions: UK double crochet (dc) equals US single crochet; UK treble crochet (tr) equals US double crochet; UK half treble crochet (htr) equals US half double crochet; and UK double treble (dtr) equals US triple crochet. Instructions within parentheses or curly brackets indicate sections to be repeated as specified in the pattern text. The use of fine-weight crochet cotton and thread, combined with small hook sizes, creates the intricate lace details essential to the doily's delicate appearance.
