Roscoe the Rat Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
Roscoe the Rat is an amigurumi toy designed by Little Green Bear. This crocheted stuffed rat character stands just under 8 inches tall when completed with the recommended materials. The design captures a charming grey rat that spends his days sleeping and grooming in his cozy underground home, waiting for nighttime adventures. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a finished plush toy suitable for display or play.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This pattern uses fundamental amigurumi construction techniques to create a three-dimensional stuffed toy. The design employs color changes throughout the pattern to create distinct features and details on the rat. Roscoe is built using the standard amigurumi method of working in continuous rounds, gradually shaping body parts through increases and decreases before stuffing and assembling them together. The pattern utilizes US crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American stitch abbreviations and conventions.
Stitches Used
While the complete stitch list is referenced on page 2 of the pattern under the abbreviations section, amigurumi patterns typically employ fundamental crochet stitches. The construction relies on basic stitches worked in tight, consistent tension to create the firm fabric necessary for stuffed toy construction. The pattern includes detailed stitch abbreviations to guide crocheters through each round of the design.
Materials Required
This pattern calls for Aran weight yarn (also known as worsted weight), providing the appropriate thickness for an 8-inch finished toy. The specific yarn colors and quantities are:
- Grey: Scheepjes Stone Washed XL in Smokey Quartz (842) – 100g
- Pink: Scheepjes Stone Washed XL in Rose Quartz (860) – 50g
- White: Scheepjes Stone Washed XL in Moon Stone (841) – 50g
- Black: Any black yarn for embroidered details (the pattern notes Scheepjes Cahlista was used)
Additional supplies include a 4mm (Size G) crochet hook, 12mm plastic safety eyes for the rat's face, polyester fiberfill stuffing to create the plush interior, a tapestry or yarn needle for finishing and assembly, stitch markers to track your place in rounds, pins for positioning pieces before sewing, and a row counter to help track progress through the pattern.
Difficulty Level
Roscoe the Rat is rated as an intermediate crochet project. This classification reflects the pattern's requirement for consistent tension, understanding of color changes, and the assembly skills needed to attach multiple crocheted pieces into a cohesive finished toy. Crocheters with foundational amigurumi experience will find this project manageable and rewarding.
