Riley Blake Whimsy Quilt Pattern by Lila Tueller – Free Downloadable PDF Summary

About This Pattern

The Riley Blake Whimsy quilt pattern is a free downloadable PDF designed by Lila Tueller and published by Riley Blake Designs. Classified as an intermediate-level quilting project, this pattern guides quilters through constructing a cheerful, whimsical throw-sized quilt that showcases a coordinated collection of Riley Blake fabrics in a classic diagonal on-point layout. The finished quilt measures a generous 67 inches by 79¾ inches, making it an ideal size for a lap quilt, throw, or child's bed covering.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a single large patchwork quilt in the blankets and throws category. The design is built around a repeating Whimsy Block, each finishing at 9 inches by 9 inches. A total of 20 Whimsy Blocks are assembled together with setting triangles and corner triangles in a diagonal, on-point arrangement to create the quilt center. The overall aesthetic is light, playful, and colorful, drawing on a wide palette of coordinating Riley Blake prints and solids.

Block Construction and Techniques

The Whimsy Block is a structured, multi-unit block that combines two distinct piecing elements:

  • Four-Patch Units: Each Four-Patch Unit is made by sewing a 2-inch blue medallion strip (fabric C2933 Blue) to a 2-inch clean white solid strip (C100-01 Clean White), pressing the seam, and then cross-cutting the joined strip set into 2-inch segments. These segments are then sewn together in pairs to form classic Four-Patch Units. A total of 80 Four-Patch Units are required for the full quilt.
  • Block Assembly: Each Whimsy Block is assembled from 4 Four-Patch Units, 1 blue medallion 3½-inch square, and 4 clean white solid 3½-inch squares, arranged and sewn together with careful attention to fabric placement as referenced in the quilt photo.

The quilt center is assembled by sewing the completed Whimsy Blocks together on the diagonal, using setting triangles and corner triangles to fill in the edges and create the characteristic on-point look. The corner and setting triangles are intentionally cut larger than needed so that the quilt top can be squared up accurately after assembly — a standard intermediate quilting technique that ensures clean, straight edges.

Quilting Techniques Used

  • Strip piecing for efficient Four-Patch Unit construction
  • Cross-cutting strip sets into uniform segments
  • Four-Patch block piecing
  • On-point (diagonal) quilt setting with setting triangles and corner triangles
  • Squaring up the quilt top after diagonal assembly
  • Binding to finish the quilt edges

All seams are sewn with a standard ¼-inch seam allowance with right sides together, which is the foundational stitch convention in patchwork quilting. Pressing seams is emphasized as part of the construction process to ensure flat, accurate piecing.

Fabrics and Materials Required

This pattern is specifically designed around the Riley Blake Designs fabric collection referenced throughout, featuring a coordinated range of prints and solids. The fabric requirements call for a variety of cuts from the following specific fabrics:
