Product Description

This easy to make, textured granny square is inspired by my other design, the Puffs and Hugs Baby Blanket.

The pattern is using puff stitches and front post stitches to create a nice, textured look.

Finished size of the square is 5"x 5", which can be used to make a big, granny square blanket.

I used DK yarn, but you can use any yarn and use as many colours as you want (I only changed colour for the last round)

US terms used throughout

I hope you'll enjoy this little project!

Happy crocheting!

Puffs and Hugs Granny Square by K.A.M.E. Crochet

What Is Being Made

The Puffs and Hugs Granny Square is a textured crochet square designed by Krisztina Anna Matejcsok-Edomer of K.A.M.E. Crochet. This is a classic granny square pattern with a finished size of 12.5 x 12.5 cm (5" x 5"), making it ideal for blankets, afghans, cushion covers, or other modular crochet projects. The square features decorative puff stitches that create dimensional texture and visual interest.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

This pattern is rated as advanced beginner difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore more textured techniques. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and includes photo tutorials to guide you through each step.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Puffs and Hugs Granny Square employs puff stitches as its signature technique, creating the dimensional "hugs" that give the pattern its name. Puff stitches are multi-loop stitches that produce a puffy, textured appearance when completed. The pattern combines these decorative stitches with traditional granny square construction methods to build a cohesive, structured square.

The textured patternwork is enhanced through blocking, which is noted as essential to the finishing process. Blocking opens up the stitches, allows the textured elements to fully develop, and ensures the square maintains its proper dimensions and shape.

Materials and Tools Required

  • Hook: 3.5 mm (F) size crochet hook (or 3 mm/5/0 size if you crochet loosely)
  • Yarn: 37 metres/40 yards of fingering weight (DK weight) yarn, approximately 7-8 grams. The designer used Universe Christmas in the Christmas Comet (24) colorway for the sample
  • Additional Tools: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and optional stitch markers for tracking your progress

Yarn Weight and Fiber Considerations

This pattern uses fingering weight yarn, which is a fine yarn that creates delicate, detailed stitchwork. The relatively small yardage requirement (40 yards) means a single square uses minimal yarn, making this pattern economical and perfect for stash-busting or creating multiple squares for larger projects. The fine yarn weight allows the puff stitches to display their texture clearly while maintaining the square's compact 5" x 5" finished size.
