Product Description
Here is a great reversible scarf design, with an added twist (or three!) Firstly, it's knitted sideways, so although you have a lot of sts on the needle, you don't have to knit so many rows. Secondly, the fringe is KNITTED IN, so once you cast off, and sew in the ends, it's ready to wear. And thirdly, the fringe is made up of litle twisty tassels that are so easy to work. I loved making it, and it was completed in a weekend.
The yarn in the photo is Rowan Tapestry DK, which is a soft wool/soybean mix in random shades. The stripes in the scarf are just the natural colour changes in the yarn. Unfortunately this yarn is now discontinued, but any random or hand-dyed DK yarn in wool, alpaca or a blend would work.
You could also try different DKs, or try thicker or thinner yarns (changing needle size as appropriate) to make a smaller or bigger scarf.

The pattern begins with a knit row, followed by a purl row with an integrated cable cast on of 30 stitches, and concludes with a cast off row of 30 stitches worked knitwise. This creates a rhythmic, textured pattern that repeats throughout the length of the scarf. The tension is set at 19 stitches and 48 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over pattern.
Materials and Needles
The original scarf photographed in the pattern was knitted using Rowan Tapestry DK yarn in shade 175, requiring 4 x 50g balls (approximately 480 meters total). Knitters use 4½ mm needles, available as either two straight needles or one 4½ mm circular needle.
The pattern encourages customization through yarn weight substitution. Knitters can experiment with Fingering or 4ply yarn for a thinner, shorter scarf suitable for girls, or choose Sportweight or Aran yarn to create a heavier winter scarf for outdoor wear. These variations allow the same pattern to produce scarves with different characteristics and purposes.
