Product Description

Inspired by all the Fisherman's rib patterns in fashion, I have designed a poncho in an oversized sweater style with longs splits in the side. The poncho is knitted in parts to create a contrast between the unstructured cable and the linear rib, called patent in Norwegian. The large splits on the sides make the poncho less voluminous. The sleeves are knitted long, to keep you warm on cold days. The poncho is knitted in a beautiful camelbrown Ask - Hifa 2, a pure wool with plenty of bounce. Patent Poncho pattern is available in English and Norwegian.

Garment Overview

The Patent Poncho is an oversized, sweater-style poncho designed by Linda Marveng, inspired by traditional fisherman's rib patterns found in contemporary fashion. This knitted poncho features a distinctive design with long splits running down both sides, reducing overall volume while maintaining warmth and style. The garment includes long sleeves to provide additional warmth during cold weather, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various seasons and occasions.

Design and Construction Techniques

The Patent Poncho is constructed using a multi-part knitting method, which allows the designer to create striking visual contrast within the garment. The poncho combines two distinct knitting patterns: an unstructured cable pattern and a linear rib pattern, known as patent in Norwegian knitting terminology. This intentional contrast between the cable and patent rib sections creates visual interest and textural depth. The strategic placement of long side splits breaks up the volume typically associated with oversized ponchos, resulting in a more refined silhouette that remains practical and wearable.

Knitting Stitches and Techniques

  • Patent Rib: A linear ribbed stitch pattern that provides structure and visual definition to portions of the poncho
  • Cable Knit: An unstructured cable pattern that creates textural contrast and adds visual complexity to the design
  • Multi-part Construction: The poncho is knitted in separate sections and assembled, allowing for precise pattern placement and contrast

Yarn and Materials

The sample garment is knitted in sport weight yarn, specifically Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk's Ask - Hifa 2, a pure wool yarn offering excellent bounce and elasticity. The sample uses the Camelbrown colorway (6098) and requires 6 skeins totaling 1890 meters or 2067 yards. Each skein contains 315 meters (344 yards) of yarn per 100 grams. For crafters seeking alternative yarns, Cascade 220 Sport, a 100% Peruvian wool in sport weight, is recommended as a suitable substitute, offering 150 meters (164 yards) per 50-gram skein.

Finished Measurements

  • Bust: 150 cm / 59 inches
  • Length: 67 cm / 26¼ inches
  • Sleeve Length: 44 cm / 17¼ inches

Skill Level and Specifications

The Patent Poncho is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and multi-part garment construction. The project is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for independent crafters worldwide. The garment is designed in one size, providing a generous, oversized fit appropriate for layering and comfortable wear.
