On those days when it looks like spring but still feels like winter, Paloma is warm and cozy, but delicate and feminine and perfect for warming up weather. I've been dying for a deep, slouchy cardigan I can throw over a spring dress or delicate top and this is it. The color is just gorgeous, and a little bit of a surprise in such a heavy texture. I love how bulky yarn takes this motif though, and I've added a few details that play on the double seed, single ribs that stand out from the stitches and more pronounced seams along the sides. More delicate seams at the shoulder keep the sweater feeling light and flattering, and the transition between ribbing and the body is kind of cool. Plus, pockets! Who does not love pockets!? Paloma is pictured in O-Wool's Legacy, a 100% organic merino that's light and cozy and knitting with it goes super fast. Similar yarn substitutes are suggested. Always check your gauge.
Paloma is a bulky, textured cardigan designed as a transitional piece for the end of winter and early spring. This knitted garment combines warmth and coziness with a feminine aesthetic, featuring practical pockets and a flattering silhouette. The cardigan is available in multiple sizes and works equally well layered over dresses or worn as a standalone piece on cool days when the weather appears mild but temperatures remain cold.
The cardigan showcases thoughtful design details that elevate its visual appeal. The primary texture comes from seed stitch work throughout the body, which creates a distinctive, deeply textured surface that takes full advantage of the bulky yarn weight. This textured foundation is complemented by strategic accent details, including single stitch ribs and distinct vertical lines positioned at the sides of the garment. These contrasting elements create visual interest and definition without overwhelming the design.
The shoulders feature more delicate seaming techniques that keep this area light and flattering, preventing the bulk of the yarn from creating an overly heavy neckline. Special attention has been paid to the transition where ribbing flows into the textured body sections, creating a polished and intentional design element that bridges the edge and main fabric seamlessly. Functional pockets are included in the design, adding both practicality and contemporary appeal.
Yarn: O-Wool Legacy Bulky, a bulky weight yarn made from 100% certified organic merino wool. The pattern is shown in the colorway Desert Blush, which coordinates beautifully with spring tones and sunshine. Each skein contains 106 yards. Yardage requirements range from 900 yards for the smallest size up to 1,650 yards for the largest size, accommodating multiple finished dimensions.
Needles: US #10.5/6.5mm needles are required for this project.
Paloma is rated as an intermediate difficulty project. While the stitch patterns themselves are relatively straightforward, the cardigan construction, shaping, and finishing details require intermediate knitting knowledge. The bulky yarn weight makes this a relatively quick and satisfying knit despite the yardage requirements, allowing knitters to complete the project in a reasonable timeframe and wear it during the transitional spring season.
