Oversize T-Jumper in BC Garn Baby Alpaca – Pattern 2376BC by Jytte Slente

This free downloadable PDF knitting pattern by designer Jytte Slente, published by BC Garn under reference number 2376BC, guides knitters through constructing a relaxed, oversized T-shaped jumper worked entirely in Baby Alpaca yarn. The design is available in two length variations — a short model and a long model — both sharing the same generous width of 140 cm, making this a truly oversized, comfortable garment suited to a wide range of body types. The short model measures 65 cm in length, while the long model extends to 75 cm.

Construction Method

One of the most distinctive features of this jumper is its clever one-piece construction. Rather than knitting separate front, back, and sleeve panels and seaming them together, the entire body is worked as a single continuous piece using a system of increases and decreases placed at four corner points. This geometric, origami-like approach means the fabric grows and shifts direction as knitting progresses, forming the characteristic T-shape organically.

The knitting begins at the mid back, with stitches increased outward from a central stitch on every second row. Increases are worked both one stitch before and one stitch after the centre stitch at each of the two corner positions, creating four increases per increase row. Stitch markers — specifically openable markers or safety pins — are used to track the centre stitches throughout. As the piece grows, the knitter works through a series of construction points labelled in the pattern as A, B, C, D, and F, which correspond to colour changes, sleeve cast-ons, shaping lines, and the final cast-off edge.

Sleeves are formed by casting on new stitches at each side of the body at the appropriate construction point, integrating them seamlessly into the existing fabric. Shaping of the sides and front pieces is achieved through a combination of both increases and decreases worked along dotted-line guides illustrated in the pattern diagram. Finishing requires only two side seams and one centre seam, keeping the making-up process minimal and straightforward.

Colour Design

The pattern is worked in three colours of BC Garn Baby Alpaca yarn, with colour changes built into the construction at specific stitch counts. The three shades used are:

  • au120 (Colour 1)
  • au121 (Colour 2)
  • au114 (Colour 3)

The first colour change to Colour 2 is triggered when there are a total of 30 stitches before and after the centre stitch and 59 stitches between them, giving the knitter a clear, stitch-count-based cue rather than a row number, which accommodates individual tension differences naturally.

Stitches and Techniques Used

Despite its striking geometric construction, the stitch pattern itself is refreshingly simple. The entire jumper is worked in garter stitch — knitting every row — which creates a dense, squishy, reversible fabric with excellent drape when worked in a luxury fibre like alpaca. The pattern notes that while the construction method may seem complex at first glance, it becomes surprisingly easy to knit once you get working.

  • Garter stitch — knit every row, forming the main fabric throughout
  • Stockinette stitch (St st) — referenced in the tension swatch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side), used as the basis for gauge measurement
  • Increases (inc) — worked by lifting the loop between stitches from the front with the left needle and knitting into the back of the loop, creating a neat, twist-closed increase
  • K2tog tbl — knit two stitches together through the back loop, used as a decrease method
  • Casting on mid-project — new stitches are added at each side to form the sleeves
  • Stitch marker placement — openable st
