The Ophira Hat is a one-size knitted hat designed by independent designer Kari-Helene Rane. This intermediate-level project creates a luxurious hat with a final circumference at the widest point of 90 cm and a head circumference of 33 cm, offering a comfortable fit for most wearers.

Knitting Techniques Used

This hat employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The construction begins with a cast-on of 180 stitches worked in the round to ensure a seamless, tubular structure. The pattern incorporates circular knitting using either 5 mm circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs), which allows for continuous rounds without seaming. The design features alternating rounds of stocking stitch (knit rounds) and reverse stocking stitch (purl rounds), creating textural contrast. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases using knit 2 together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) techniques, which are essential for tapering the crown. The pattern also incorporates yarn overs (yo) to create decorative or structural elements. Light steaming is recommended after completion to set the tension and enhance the finished appearance.

Materials and Specifications

The Ophira Hat is crafted using Purl Alpaca Fine, a premium yarn composed of 100% English alpaca. This luxurious fiber provides exceptional softness and breathability. The yarn is supplied in 50-gram balls with a yardage of 116 meters per ball, and the pattern requires 2 balls to complete the project. The photographed sample was worked in the shade Alpaca Dew.

Knitting needles required are 5 mm circular needles or DPNs, selected to match the specified tension. Additional notions include a stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round, one small button for finishing details, and a blunt tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends securely.

Tension and Fit

The pattern specifies a tension of 18 stitches and 23 rows to a 10 cm square, measured over stocking stitch after light steaming. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit and drape.
