Product Description
A crochet pattern for you to make a very cute but mischevious little fellow.
He is about 4in/10cm high depending on your tension. I would class this pattern as easy.
He crochets up quickly and only uses up small amounts of yarn. I have specified Rowan Cotton Glace (DK) yarn for his feet and comb but you could use any DK weight yarn.
I have included lots of photos especially when crocheting the fiddly bits and so would suit all levels.
There is only a small amount of sewing to assemble him and I have included lots of directions to help you along the way.
Skills required: crochet in the round, single crochet, slip stitch
A suggested yarn is shown below.

Project Overview
Oliver Boliver's Cheeky Chick is a downloadable crochet pattern designed by Penny Connor for creating an adorable amigurumi-style toy chick. This finished project stands at approximately 10cm in height, making it perfectly sized to display on a desk, shelf, or carry in a pocket. The Cheeky Chick is an ideal project for crafters looking to expand their amigurumi skills with a relatively quick and rewarding make.
Craft Technique and Skill Level
This pattern uses crochet as the primary construction method and is classified as an intermediate difficulty project. The design serves as a solid introduction to amigurumi crochet—the Japanese technique of creating three-dimensional stuffed toys through tight, seamless crocheting. The pattern guides you through shaping and assembly while maintaining the characteristic rounded forms that give amigurumi toys their charming appearance.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed to work with DK weight yarn, which provides an appropriate thickness for creating defined stitches and a sturdy finished toy. You will also need a crochet hook suitable for DK yarn, safety eyes with backings for secure attachment, and polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material to fill the completed pieces.
Construction Process and Key Techniques
- Amigurumi assembly: The pattern involves crocheting individual body parts that are then stuffed and joined together to form the complete chick
- Eye insertion: Safety eyes with backings must be inserted into the head before stuffing and closing, with specific guidance provided in the pattern for correct placement
- Strategic breaks: The head construction includes a deliberate break after round 13 to allow for eye insertion and stuffing before the final rounds are completed
- Seamless finishing: The pattern emphasizes techniques that create a polished, professional-looking toy
Pattern Details
The Cheeky Chick pattern includes detailed written instructions and placement guidance to ensure successful completion. The relatively quick crochet time makes this an accessible project for intermediate crafters who have basic amigurumi experience or are ready to develop these skills. The small finished size and charming design make it an excellent gift or personal collection piece.
