Product Description
This is a shawl that looks complicated, but it is deceptively simple. Just chains, single crochets and double crochets. (US terms) It is a 4 row repeat that is easy to learn and make.
Can be make in any size desired.
You can use any yarn and hook size you like, but I used plied yarn #2 weight (color changing) and a slightly larger hook (J, 6.00mm) to create a beautiful lacy look.
You can make this with any yarn you like. Just choose a hook a couple sizes larger than called for on the yarn label. Any of the yarns listed here would make good choices for this shawl.
The one pictured here is a shawlette size (54” wide and about 22” tall) but you can easily make yours as long/wide as you like by adding stitches. Instructions for that are in the pattern.
This pattern includes a pattern chart that makes it easier to follow.
Ocean Waves Shawl by Kris of Light and Joy Designs
What is Being Made
The Ocean Waves Shawl is a crocheted shawlette design that creates a visually intricate appearance while remaining accessible to advanced beginners and beyond. The finished shawlette measures approximately 54 inches wide and about 22 inches tall, though crafters can easily customize the length to their preference. This versatile accessory combines aesthetic appeal with approachable construction techniques.
Craft and Construction Techniques
This crochet project employs lacy construction methods that produce an elegant, openwork fabric. The designer specifically recommends using color-changing yarn paired with a slightly larger hook size relative to the yarn weight to achieve the beautiful lacy aesthetic. The pattern is designed to appear more complex than it actually is, making it an excellent project for building confidence in intermediate crochet skills. The use of color-changing yarn adds visual interest and dimension to the finished piece without requiring complicated color-work techniques.
Stitches and Pattern Details
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided materials, the pattern creates an openwork lacy fabric suitable for a shawl construction. The design is forgiving enough for advanced beginners to execute successfully, suggesting the use of fundamental crochet stitches combined in a strategic arrangement that produces the wave-like visual effect referenced in the shawl's name.
Materials and Yarn Options
The Ocean Waves Shawl offers flexibility in yarn selection to suit different preferences and budgets:
- Original Design Yarn: 1 skein of Red Heart "It's a Wrap Rainbow" in the "Nautical" colorway (623 yards, weight 2) combined with 2 skeins of Lion Brand "Ombre Life" yarn (800 yards total, weight 2)
- Alternative Options: Approximately 500-800 yards of Woolpedia.net "Colors" yarn in 4-6 ply weight, or any comparable 2-weight, 4-6 ply yarn totaling 400-800 yards depending on desired shawl size
- Hook Size: J hook (6.0 mm) – using a slightly larger hook than typical for the yarn weight creates the desired lacy appearance
Yarn Weight Compatibility
This pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights including 4-ply, DK, sport, and worsted weights, providing crafters with numerous options for customization. The flexibility in yarn selection means the finished shawl can be created in various color palettes and fiber contents while maintaining the intended design aesthetic.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner-friendly project with advanced beginner capability, the Ocean Waves Shawl is designed to build skills and confidence. Despite its intricate appearance, the pattern structure remains straightforward enough for those with foundational crochet knowledge to complete successfully.
