Product Description
Babies need sweet blankets. I wanted to make a design that could be used for both boys and girls. Here is to my sweet pea baby. This blanket could be knit in sport, DK, or worsted weight yarn, just adjust the size of needles. Sample was done using about 952yrds (875m) of sport weight yarn, 7 balls of MillaMia naturally soft merino in Sky Blue (126) using US 6 (4.0mm) needles. Sky Blue color is currently discontinued, suggested color substitute is Forget me Not (120).
Directions come in two versions, short and full. Full version is an explicit description of all 224 rows of the blanket body. If you use these directions you do not need short version, so print accordingly.
Typo on page 2 Directions, correct version is "28 full leaf vine repeats" not "24 full leaf vine repeats."
Type on page 2 Materials, correct version is "952 yards (875m)"
My Little Sweet Pea Baby Blanket
Project Overview
My Little Sweet Pea Baby Blanket is a knitted baby blanket designed by MariaJane. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished blanket measuring 35 inches by 28 inches when blocked (89 centimeters by 71 centimeters). The blanket combines textured stitch patterns with a structured border design, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to expand their skills beyond basic techniques.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a rectangular baby blanket suitable for newborns and infants. The blanket features a decorative border frame surrounding a central panel, creating visual interest and dimension. The finished piece is appropriately sized for use as a crib blanket, stroller cover, or nursery décor item.
Knitting Techniques Used
The My Little Sweet Pea Baby Blanket employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its finished design:
- Seed stitch borders: The edges of the blanket are worked in seed stitch, a fundamental textured stitch that creates a bumpy, reversible fabric ideal for framing the central design
- Stitch markers: The pattern uses multiple stitch markers (4 total) to organize and separate different pattern sections, allowing knitters to track multiple stitch patterns simultaneously across the width of the blanket
- Pattern repetition: The design incorporates distinct pattern rows that repeat in sequence, with separate stitch patterns designated for different sections of the blanket (marked as row 1v, row 2v, row 1p, row 2p, and so on)
- Row-by-row construction: The blanket is worked flat from cast-on to bind-off, with each row building upon the previous one to create the complete design
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout this blanket is seed stitch, which forms the border sections. Seed stitch is created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, producing a textured, non-curling fabric that lies flat and is reversible on both sides. The central panel incorporates additional stitch patterns indicated in the directions, though the specific stitch abbreviations for the center panel patterns are referenced as distinct row sequences within the pattern.
Materials and Yarn
The My Little Sweet Pea Baby Blanket requires approximately 952 yards (875 meters) of sport weight yarn. The sample shown in the pattern was created using 7 balls of MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino in the colorway Sky Blue (126). Sport weight yarn is a lightweight, versatile yarn weight that knits to a fine, delicate fabric suitable for baby items. Merino wool provides softness, breathability, and gentle care for sensitive infant skin.
Needles and Notions
This pattern calls for US 6 (4.0mm) knitting needles to work the sport weight yarn at the appropriate gauge. Additional notions required include 4 stitch markers to separate the different pattern sections across the blanket width and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion. Gauge is noted as not being critical for this project, making it more forgiving for knitters who may not achieve exact gauge measurements.
Difficulty Level
This blanket is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While it uses fundamental stitches like seed stitch, the combination of working multiple pattern sections simultaneously using stitch markers and managing several different stitch pattern rows requires organizational skills and attention to detail beyond beginner level. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions, using stitch markers effectively, and maintaining consistent tension across a larger project.
