This free downloadable knitting pattern, Plymouth Yarn Design Studio F286, guides knitters through creating a soft, cozy baby blanket measuring approximately 28" x 32" — a perfect lap-sized throw for newborns and infants. Originally published in 2000 as the legendary "8-hour blanket," this pattern has sold in the thousands and remains the best-selling pattern Plymouth Yarn has ever produced. This updated version makes the project even more approachable for beginners by simplifying the border treatment, replacing the original seed stitch edging with the even more straightforward Garter stitch.
Pattern F286 is explicitly designed for beginner knitters who have just learned their two foundational stitches: the knit stitch and the purl stitch. If you can knit and purl, you have everything you need to complete this baby blanket. The use of a double strand of yarn held together throughout the project speeds up knitting time considerably, contributing to that famous "8-hour" finish time. This makes it an ideal first project for new knitters, as well as a satisfying quick knit for more experienced crafters who want a fast, gift-ready baby shower present.
The blanket is worked flat from bottom to top in a straightforward row-by-row construction. The entire piece is worked holding two strands of yarn together as one throughout, which creates a thicker, warmer fabric and significantly reduces knitting time. The construction begins with a loose cast-on of 73 stitches, followed by a Garter stitch border of 10 rows at the bottom edge. The body of the blanket then transitions into a simple combination stitch pattern that pairs a Garter stitch border on both sides of each row with a Stockinette stitch center panel, creating a classic, clean look with flat, non-curling edges.
